Week 8!

Well we've reached the end of Season 1 of TOS and only two episodes this week.

McCoy strawberry floats up the timeline and squidgy things fly through the air.

"City on the Edge of Forever" is regarded as one of, if not the, best episode of TOS. Perhaps one of the best episodes of any Star Trek show. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it guys. :D

City on the Edge of Forever

I'm not saying this is a bad episode, it clearly isn't, but it's nowhere near close to my favourite so far (Balance of Terror).

I like the idea of having to let an innocent die to stop the Nazis winning the war but they seemed to come to that conclusion pretty quickly. They didn't seem to even consider any alternatives.

It took me way too long to recognise Joan Collins as well.

Operation Annihilate

I cracked up at the lady that said "they don't look real!". Yeah, no gooseberry fool.

Not a bad episode, but another one where these highly intelligent people are really bloody stupid. "We have to blind Spock because the people on the planet will go blind!". What?

And then for Kirk to blame Bones, Bones wanted to give him goggles you idiot, it was Spock who seemed to think him going blind was somehow necessary.

And that's season 1 done. Overall I've enjoyed it, it's been fun even when the episodes or the creatures have been gooseberry fool. 7/10.

Watched "City on the Edge of Forever" the other day and it's still fantastic.

Really well written, performed and put together. Especially those final scenes where Edith dies and Bones is outraged but Kirk just quietly grieves. No wee joke at the end, you get the impression that it'll be with Kirk for a long time. It's played seriously and it's all the better for it.

I mean she's never mentioned again and Kirk is back to normal next week, but that's just how episodic TV worked for so very long.

Gonna watch the last one tomorrow, then have a week off. Looking forward to Season 2!

All done with season 1 here as well!

City on the Edge of Forever
Yeah I don't think this one quite lived up to the billing for me sadly. It's by no means bad, but neither did I come away thinking it was a classic.

It's a decent concept and there's definitely the kernel of a really good story here - the dubious moral implications of choosing whether or not to kill someone / allow them to die in order to re-establish a timeline is a solid setup, but the execution really lets it down.

The initial discover of the "time portal" is straight up ridiculous - oh yeah it's a magic door in space that appears to be operated by some equivalent of God lets not bother asking questions about it or ever mention the thing again! (to be fair I don't know if this is actually true, but it feels like a time portal controlled by something that is basically god would warrant a bit more attention long term!

And the way they get there in the first place - LOL McCoy accidentally injected himself with some cordrazine! (put a strawberry floating cap on the syringe Bones you idiot!) A large chunk of the problems the crew encounter would be easily solved if they just had some actual regulations and discipline on the ship - why does every man and his dog seem to be able to just commandeer the transporter whenever they want it!?

The romance between Kirk and Joan Collins is never really convincing enough for me either, which is part of what undermines the weight of the final resolution - I just don't buy that Kirk cared that much about her.

Operation: Annihilate!
Boy, this was a bit of a mixed bag to end on! Possibly the most ridiculous looking attempt at an alien we've had yet in the show - attack of the wobbly pancakes!

There were a few too many unclear things for me: Why had nobody tried to stop these aliens before? By all accounts they had destroyed multiple worlds already - at the very least surely they should have evacuated planets along the path the aliens were travelling and been a bit more cautious about who they let travel around that region of space?! I don't think it's ever really clear what the aliens wanted either?

Everyone takes far too long to circle back around to the clue about the guy flying into the sun which feels like it would have been sticking out like a sore thumb for ages as "the solution" to anyone with half a brain watching! I don't think there's any indication as to why the guy originally flies into the sun - it might have been better if they had discovered the breadcrumb trail of someone else's research into how to stop the aliens and had to fill in the gaps and finish it rather than everything being so random as it ends up being.

Spock and Bones forgetting to check whether it was the light of the sun that actually killed the alien was a bit of an oversight as well, felt like a bit of a forced "Kirk has a great revelation!" moment to me. Similarly everyone agreeing to blind Spock without any attempt to tease out exactly what they needed to do was just stupid!

We did get some more solid banter between the crew over these last few episodes though, one of the things that stands out most from this first season for me is that the core strength is absolutely in these main characters and their relationships with one another. Spock, Bones and Kirk bickering with one another is always entertaining and if they get that right then it's much easier to forgive any holes in the actual plots or ridiculous looking costumes and special effects!

PostRe: The Epic Star Trek Re-Watch - T.O.S - Catch Up Week! Season 2 starts Sunday 24th!
by Cheeky Devlin » Sun Oct 17, 2021 5:32 pm

So we're having a week off, basically to allow anyone who was lagging behind to potentially catch up a little bit.

Season 2 will be kicking off this coming Sunday! I've updated the OP with the schedule for Season 2 as well (Or I will have after I post this).

No-one else seems to be watching/commenting anyway. If no-one else chimes in by the end of tomorrow, I might just bring the start of season 2 forward.

Pancake was the only other person really talking about the show and he went quiet about half-way through.

Well no-one seems to be "catching up" so as I mentioned we're gonna make a start on Season 2 NOW!

This week....

Spock's on the pull, a buff Greek god messes with the crew, evil AI threatens the ship and alternate realities show dark reflections.

Get that watched guys!

Amok Time

Horny Spock

And was that the first "live long and prosper"?

Decent episode, it's amazing though how every planet seems to be either a desert wasteland or a lush green paradise. Hopefully eventually we'll get a little more variety, although budget/effects limitations might mean that's not possible until later series/movies.

Amok Time is a decent episode.

Also has one of my favourite TOS pieces of music.

EDIT: And I think it might be the first LLAP, yeah.

Now I know what the "Zoidberg gets super horny" episode of Futurama was inspired by! And yeah that battle music is iconic! :toot:

Yeah this was pretty decent overall for a first episode back, we finally got some more Vulcan exposition which was nice. When you think about it it's actually pretty bold that they went through the entirety of the first season without really going into any real detail about Spock's alien status and who the Vulcan's (or "Vulcanians" as they called them initially!) actually are. T'Pring was a bit strawberry floating militant though wasn't she? "Well I want this guy here so I don't give a gooseberry fool if the way to get him involves killing one of you strawberry floaters"

Love the classic shirt rip for Kirk in the battle, they just can't stop themselves from trying to show some Shatner flesh!

Still think the Enterprise crew are getting shafted in the fashion stakes though, they have to wear those shirts with boring old Starfleet logos on them whereas swanky pants like Admiral Komack and those other guys on the star bases get the far more prestige looking shiny sun shape brooch:

Originally the logo was the Enterprise logo rather than the logo for all of Starfleet. It was retconned into being the Starfleet logo later.
