Hmm, not quite as horrendously racist as I expected, but still way too much of the noble savage/white saviour stuff to be comfortable viewing.

Shatner's overacting is always hilarious and welcome though.

The stuff on the Enterprise was much better. A whole episode of them just on the Enterprise desperately trying to save a planet would have been better.

But at least we got an explanation for why human cultures are all over the galaxy.

With a handful of exceptions I find the ones mostly set on the Enterprise to be the ones I enjoy more. Tends to be less dumb planet of the week gooseberry fool and more character work.

Main point for me - what the hell happened to Scotty between season 2 and 3?! Dude looks like he's aged about 20 years!

I thought the same thing. He aged 20 years in 1 year. He must have partied HARD.

Maybe that drinking contest he had with an alien a few episodes ago finally caught up with him!

"The Enterprise Incident"

Great stuff. Love anything that's more ship-based, especially when it involves the Romulans.

"The Paradise Syndrome"

Decent enough episode. But I never find "crew interacts with primitive peoples" particularly interesting, regardless of which Trek show it is.

Just watched The Enterprise Incident myself, a pretty solid effort even if the fact that Spock and Kirk were in on it together from the start was pretty obvious. Nice to get a bit more Romulan action as well.

I like that in the TOS days the other species had a bit more variety to their appearance in terms of hair, clothing etc. Come TNG and beyond it seems that every Romulan, Klingon, Vulcan etc. is required to wear exactly the same clothes and have the same carbon copy hair as the rest of their species!

They all look human though except for some pointy ear and some occasional blacking up.

The rubber costumes they had in earlier episodes looked awful, but at least it wasn't another bloody human!

Oh yeah in terms of prosthetics etc. they went on to do better things - but I just like that in these early days we get things like Vulcans/Romulans with long hair and wearing different styles of clothes. The later shows make out that every single Vulcan has the same bowl cut hair, all Klingons have the same beard and long messy hair etc.

The Paradise Syndrome
Meh, not complete gooseberry fool but the stuff on the ship was more interesting than the hokey, "amnesia Kirk becomes a god to somewhat iffy representation of a 'primitive' culture" stuff on the planet. Probably the most interesting part was the somewhat tossed off explanation for why we see so many humanoids around - do "The Preservers" ever get mentioned again?

Is There in Truth No Beauty?

The trippy 1960s effects are so distracting. Just because the Beatles went psychedelic doesn't mean everything has to be.

It was an ok episode. The FPS Spock fight was hilarious.

Not that I'm aware of, no.

Another ship-bound episode and the second appearance of Diana Muldaur in Trek (different role though). Decent enough episode and I love the concept of an alien race so different that to look upon it is to go insane. Any episode that gives Nimoy a chance to play Spock a bit differently is always good, even if it's only for the one scene.

Snazzy visor as well.

Spectre of the Gun

The plot is clearly insane, but it made for a really fun and enjoyable episode. Star Trek v Wild West, what's not to love?

Although it was bloody stupid that they didn't think they could change history. They must have known they had not actually gone back in time!

And The Children Shall Lead
Pretty poor effort, though probably not the worst episode we'll see featuring kids (naturally as this is a universe where Wesley Crusher exists! :dread: )

Kirk gets upset when some ginger kid keeps doing the 'wanker symbol' at him and McCoy gets strangely excited about finally managing to make children cry!

Day of the Dove

I do enjoy a Klingon episode, although this wasn't one of the best. The alien threat was (literally) laughable at the end. Some fun fighting though!

The Klingon face paint was awful in this episode, borderline offensive.

Spectre of the Gun

You can tell that the budget this season was slashed and they are reduced to using whatever sets, or in this case, pieces of sets that are lying around the lot.
I do like the weird red haze in the background though. Suitably weird.

Besides that it was fairly by-the-numbers.

I think Red Dwarf did it much better with Gunman of the Apocalypse, which has some good similarities.

For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky

Daft episode that borrowed a lot from earlier episodes but I really enjoyed it!

McCoy is an absolute studmuffin.

One of the things I would change about TOS in general would be to add more McCoy. For such a great character he's horrendously under-utilised.
