It's not too bad. Voyager is decent enough for the most part. It's just the start of Enterprise that will be a relatively rough way to end the year.

Yes! It'll be good to get some more people involved! :D

I am wondering if I should start a new thread for TNG. It's substantially longer and has those four movies on the end as well.

The Cloud Minders

A pretty clunky tale of a two tier society. The allegory against racism felt heavy handed but was probably needed in the 60s.

Despite its clunkiness, there was lots to enjoy here and I don't just mean the costume of the lady that fancied Spock. ;)

The Savage Curtain

Meh. Another "god" like being, another "Kirk fights to the death" and another "Ooo! American Presidents are great" episode. And the most blacked up Klingon yet.

I did like that they didn't just take Earth heroes/villains though. And that there was a non-human looking alien!

But overall, I just couldn't help thinking of Red Dwarf.

All Our Yesterdays

It's weird how 99% of aliens not only look human, but also share an almost exact copy of Earth history.

Other than that, this is a good episode. Spock having emotions and being horny is always fun and any episode that has a lot of McCoy is always welcome.

Only one more to go

Moggy's in a rush to get to the animated series!

The Cloud Minders
It's Cloud City, but where's Lando?! This was okay, but nothing really stood out about it. Although I did enjoy Spock's chat up line:

"I have never before met a Vulcan, sir."
"Nor I a work of art, madam."

I'm dreading TAS a little bit to be fair. I've never made it more than a couple of episodes in, so it's the only show in this whole under-taking where there will be "new" episodes for me. Luckily we're going to blast through it in three weeks which should make it alright I hope. Then onto the (mostly) good TOS movies!

The Cloud Minders was decent. Not a particularly original concept these days, but it was done well enough.

TOS sure has a lot of diseases that need a specific plant/ore/material to cure, but that are only found on worlds run by arseholes.

Turnabout Intruder

Objectively it's rubbish and massively sexist. But Shatner trying to act like a woman made me laugh more than any other episode. I genuinely don't know if he's a decent actor or the worst actor ever to stand in front of a camera.

And that's the Original Series done. Bring on the super high quality animation!

I kinda like Turnabout Intruder just for the sheer silliness of absolutely everything involved with it.

I'm looking forward to the Animated series. Whilst the animation isn't exactly top quality (Especially by todays standards) the shift to animation does allow them to shake off some of the limitations of the budget that TOS had, so they can have better alien, ship and location designs.
Getting back a lot of the original cast to voice their characters was also a huge bonus (No Walter Koenig though sadly, Chekhov isn't in the series at all)

And done...

Turnabout Intruder

Absolutely silly, but still fun. Not the best episode but a decent enough end to the show.

As for TOS overall, I think it defintely works best as an episode here and there rather than going through it at speed. Too many repeated concepts and situations.
But it's carried by its sense of fun and especially the chemistry between Kirk, Spock and Bones.
Well worth watching at least once, but not something I would want to work through again for a few years I think.

The Savage Curtain
Meh, it's not the worst thing we've had from the show but it's very derivative of concepts and plot beats that they've trotted out time and again now.

Not sure that Kahless is really worthy of the level of worship and admiration that the Klingon's seem to give him in TNG and DS9 - the dude just spends this episode throwing some rocks and doing crap impersonations of people!

Oh and what the hell was that bad guy design in this?

Image

Looks like something from strawberry floating Power Rangers!

All Our Yesterdays
Better than the last episode, a decent knockabout yarn with the crew being stranded back in time (again!) Moggy's comment about everywhere seeming to mirror Earth's history is on point - it's getting a bit ridiculous at this stage.

One episode left to go for me!

I was just glad to get an alien that didn't look exactly like a human with a dodgy haircut!

Given that it was the start of the 70s and they didn't have a huge budget I'd say it's a fairly decent alien really.

Beyond the Farthest Star
Yesteryear
One of Our Planets is Missing
The Lorelei Signal

My wife and son are out for the afternoon, so I thought I'd crack on.

The animation isn't great compared to modern cartoons, but I soon got used to it.

Beyond the Farthest Star & One of Our Planets is Missing are a bit rubbish. But Yesteryear was great fun, seeing a young Spock was great. Vulcan is a shithole though, any logical being would go somewhere nicer.

Lorelei Signal was hilarious. Kirk and beautiful sirens, what could go wrong? :slol:

PostRe: The Epic Star Trek Re-Watch - The Animated Series - Week 1 starts pg 22!
by Cheeky Devlin » Sun Jan 09, 2022 11:25 pm

Yeah I was a bit late getting this updated today.

Behold my craply drawn breakdown of the TAS schedule.

As a reminder we'll be doing TAS in two weeks of 8 episodes and one week of 6.

Image

Mostly this is due to the episodes only being 22 minutes long each, so it'll take up the same amount of time as "normal" Trek episodes will.

Moggy is clearly eager to get started.

I saw your post in the Last TV Show thread Moggy and I'm glad you enjoyed TOS. It's very much a product of it's time, but it's still a mostly enjoyable slice of TV.
I'm looking forward to seeing what you think of TNG, especially once we get through the first two seasons. :D

I'll be starting on my episodes tomorrow, generally doing two a day so we'll see how I get on with Beyond the Farthest Star and Yesteryear.
I'm eager to see more of TAS as it's the only Trek show I've never really watched.

EDIT: Nice to see you getting on with the first few episodes Moggy. Hopefully they'll keep us engaged for the next few weeks.
