Originally the logo was the Enterprise logo rather than the logo for all of Starfleet. It was retconned into being the Starfleet logo later.

Yeah I figured it would be something like that. It's definitely the more iconic logo to be fair!

Who Mourns For Adonais

Star Trek really does think the universe is populated by gods. How many episodes is it now with a god or godlike being? And Kirk strawberry floating loved a "god" telling him he was just like Hercules.

I know this was made in the '60s, but they must have had some idea of how culture was changing. They've done so well with having a diverse crew, but then they are "oh no, she's all woman! That means she'll get married soon and she'll leave the service!" "Oh my beautiful new dress!" "please don't hurt my friends I'm just a lovely girl" :fp:

That green hand

That was a lot of fun though.

I always find myself drifting away a bit when it's an episode like "Who Mourns for Adonais". It's fine, I guess, it's just a bit boring.

Like Moggy says it's another "God like being" episode, another easily swayed female crew-member.

Best parts are Giant-Green-Space-Hand and everything Chekov says. He's great fun in this.

Yeah what the hell is going on with the hair, it's like he's got an escaped tribble on his head!

They wanted a younger cast member, which is why they try to make him look like one of the Monkees. Apparently his hair was already thinning a bit so they stuck him in a wig for a few episodes.

I laughed in the Apollo episode when Kirk asked how old he was "I'm 22!" and then Kirk dismisses him with absolute contempt

Yeah there was a definite Monkees/Beatles "mop top" vibe to it, I can see what they were thinking I guess but glad it's not going to be around for too long.

I'm never sure on the wig chronology of Shatner either, he's definitely wigged up by the time the movies start but there's something decidedly dodgy looking about his hair in the series at times as well!

The Changeling

Error....error...sterilise...

I liked that one, even though it was deeply flawed in execution. Uhura went from completely mind wiped to reading within a few minutes.

And was it supposed to look like the probe had an erection when it heard her singing? ;)

I have a hazy memory of a Star Trek film where they find a Voyager probe that has become intelligent. It's interesting (as with the countless gods) just how many recycled plots/ideas there are in this show.

I've was going to go to bed, but I've just read the description of the next episode and I don't think I can resist barbarians running a parallel Enterprise.

Mirror Mirror

I was expecting literal barbarians but it was a little (although not much) more nuanced than that.

Kirk barely blinked before getting stuck into the captain's woman

And Spock does look better with a beard.

4 decent episodes for this shorter than usual week.

Week 2 begins!

More of a mixed bag this week I think, but lets see how we get on.

Iffy portrayals of native peoples! Deranged Admirals! Alien woman gets horny for Kirk! Harcourt Fenton Mudd returns!

Just realised I never said anything about "The Changeling" and "Mirror, Mirror".

The Changeling - Not too much to say. It's decent. It ends with the "lead the machine into a logic-trap" resolution, but I can forgive that because at the time it would have been fairly original. Uhura's "recovery" was utter bollocks though.

Mirror, Mirror - Great fun. A chance for the cast to completely ham-things up, which they do wonderfully. We won't see the Mirror universe again for a very long time, but it's always fun when we do. It's also got Spock's awesome goatee.

The Apple

Aka Planet of the Trumps

A bit of a meh episode. Bones insistence that they had to interfere was weird, Spock made a much better point. They were safe, healthy, happy and immortal, leave them alone!

I laughed at how many times Spock almost died, he seems pretty much unkillable. And it was hilarious when the female crew member was too embarrassed to even say the word "sex".

Not one of the best, but it's nice to see where Trump got the inspiration for his hair and skin colour.

I've got some catching up to do this week. Sounds like the remainder of last weeks episodes are decent though so that's a good motivator!

Yeah last week had at three great episodes and one ok one (For me anyway).

Watched "The Apple" this morning. I dunno, it's just not particularly interesting. It's just another "primitive culture worships advanced being/machine" episode. It's not a bad episode, but it's not a particularly good one either. Moggy is right about Spock being near-invincible. And Chekov is a horny wee bastard.

The Doomsday Machine

Much much better than the Apple, there was some decent tension and I enjoyed the hammy acting from the commodore.

And who doesn't want to watch starships fighting the eye of Sauron?

"The Doomsday Machine" is a great episode. The first time, though not the last, that Trek will take inspiration from Moby Dick. Decker is great and does a good job of playing up the "unhinged" Commodore obsessed with getting his revenge on the machine. For me I think some of the best episodes are those that really focus in on the Enterprise itself and the mechanics and movements of a battle. "Balance of Power" is probably the best example, but this is a good one as well.

Taking a day off from TOS, but I'll be watching Catspaw tomorrow.

Just a small thing, but the newest show "Star Trek: Prodigy" starts tomorrow. It's a CG animated show with a more kid-oriented focus (It's on Nickelodeon), but also has Janeway from Voyager as a supporting character. Since it's a brand-new show you guys might want to get in on the ground floor. I don't expect it will be too reference heavy (It's not Lower Decks) and as it's for kids I imagine it will be designed for total newcomers to the franchise.

Catspaw

A very meh episode, I felt myself drifting to sleep during it. It was very appropriate that we are watching it just before Halloween though, great timing!

I, Mudd

Another "let's make the robots deactivate by being silly" episode. There are a LOT of recycled plots in this show and we are not even very far in.

It was an enjoyable episode though. Mudd was funny and less annoying than last time. We got another glimpse at horny Chekhov and an amazing dance scene.

A decent week, other than the rubbish Catspaw.
