The Galileo Seven

Spock is such a dick.

The much later CGI additions are appalling. I don't know how bad the original special effects looked, but they should have left it alone.

Story wise this was decent, even if the creatures were far more hilarious than scary.

strawberry float me you weren't wrong about those spears!

Spock is in some ways a dick but it's a but tiring already hearing everyone go on about it - we know he's a Vulcan, we know they aren't slaves to emotion and view situations in a logical and somewhat cold way, get the strawberry float over it already! I guess our familiarity with these characters over 60 years makes it easier to get tired of this quicker which wouldn't have been the case at the time, but even so canonically we're supposed to believe that the Vulcans have had contact with humans for over 100 years at this point - they're logical behaviour shouldn't be such a bloody surprise!

And yeah I said the same before about the CGI, it really sticks out badly and I wish they'd left it as it was in all honesty

I haven't minded it up until that episode, but it stuck out like a sore thumb. It reminded me of how bad Red Dwarf looked when they switched from models to ghastly 90s CGI.

The Squire of Gothos

Camp nonsense, but I really enjoyed it. The all powerful space god being a bored teenager was a decent idea and I loved how much he hated Spock.

Big Q vibes from The Squire there, but yeah it was decent enough overall. Another classic Kirk fight at the end, he loves a good bit of rough and tumble!

I thought the ending was pure pap though, fair enough make it about him being essentially a child but the interaction between him and his "parents" being such a pastiche of 1950s American parent child squabbles was tiresome within a few seconds!

Arena

I'm about halfway through the episode and it's not bad. Decent war zone plot, exciting chase and then some superbeing telling Kirk he has to fight an alien....

....and then the fight starts.

Who the strawberry float thought that was a good idea? The worst costume I've ever seen and a fight with punches so slow that even Captain Tom could dodge - and he's dead.

:fp:

Lol at Kirk's "he's survived attacks from me that would have killed any human", strawberry float off

"I'd trade all these diamonds for a good club"

Kirk's bamboo gun

That was genuinely appalling, the whole show should have been cancelled at this point.

Yep, it was all over the strawberry floating shop!

"There's something about sulphur... If only I could remember!"

And yeah Kirk bragging about his attack power was properly LOL inducing.

The ending where Kirk shows mercy, "no I won't kill you!" ... You just strawberry floating shot diamond into the mother strawberry floaters chest! Stopping now isn't exactly demonstrating how nice you are!

Tomorrow Is Yesterday.

Much better than the appalling Arena episode, but why the strawberry float are people freaked out by Spock? Other than weird ears and a gooseberry fool haircut he looks completely human, there's no way people would look at him and think "ALIEN!!!"

The fighting is rubbish though, Kirk's technique of "jump at three people" seems unlikely to work in real life.

"This thing? It's just something I slipped on"

If time travel is as easy as slingshotting around the sun, I assume they can do it whenever they want?

That's me caught up for the week. 4 episodes of varying quality, but even the worst made me laugh enough to make it enjoyable.

A lot of the way Kirk throws himself at people is funny and probably not that practical but I wouldn't change it for the world lol

Kirk's style is unorthodox, but effective 8-)

Hand to hand combat choreography is so poor in a lot of 60s/70s stuff outside of actual martial arts movies, I'd have loved to have seen a fight between Shatner's Kirk and Connery/Moore era James Bond!

Kirk-Fu is amazingly unpractical and stupid looking, but I love it.

Also well done on some of you blasting through this weeks episodes! I've not even started yet!

"The Galileo Seven" - It's not bad, I just find it to be dull. We know that they're going to be rescued and most of the drama comes from wondering which of the non-main crew are going to get a comically large spear fatally hurled in their general direction. The arguing between the survivors is un-interesting in the extreme. It's an episode where I found myself on my phone most of the time through it.

"The Squire of Gothos" - Another "God-like" being episode, but one of the better ones thanks mostly to William Campbell's performance as Trelane. He shows up again as a different character in Season 2 in a role he reprises years later in Deep Space Nine (One of very few people to do so). He's perfect as the spoilt "child" and is great fun here.

Finished the week now with Tomorrow is Yesterday. Not a bad episode, but one of those that definitely has a tone and pacing which is very much "of the time". This is a script and story that would have been sent back for a few rewrites these days as the structure of the whole thing needs some tightening up.

The relatively blasé attitude toward strawberry floating with timelines is interesting given how much everyone gooseberry fools the bed in more modern Trek whenever there is a sniff that they might be altering the past.

And yeah the "I've never believed in little green men", "Neither have I" exchange between the past Captain and Spock would have worked better if he looked anything like a little green man and not just basically human!

Kirk's interrogation was probably the best part, Shatner was loving it!

Oh and there's no way I'm going to believe that Kirk didn't deliberately request a sexy lady voice for the ship's computer!

Kirk is literally the reason everyone in more modern Trek is so paranoid about Time Travel
In DS9 the temporal investigation agents despise his name.

The pre-intro visual of the Enterprise just bobbing through the sky is hilarious though.

Week 6 is here!

Nice mix of episodes this time around, with Court shenanigans, oppressed people, disintigration booths and the first appearance of Kirk's deadliest foe.
