Yeah the penultimate week for The Original Series.

I can't remember much about three of them, but The Way to Eden is for me at least, one of the worst episodes of Star Trek ever commited to the screen.

So enjoy that one.

Glad that we're beginning to get to the end of TOS now.

I still love it overall, but I think it definitely works best in isolation, dipping into an episode here and there rather than binging.

Lots of repeated concepts and the episodes are too often just "situation of the week" with the stories revolving around whatever premise they have, rather than how the characters react to them. We rarely get episodes focused on any of the characters and when we do they're almost all Spock related. We know very little about Kirk and Bones and even less about Uhura, Scotty, Sulu and Chekov.

As much as I love the original cast, they just never got the chance to properly explore their characters within the series, which is something the other shows managed really well.

With that said, we will be starting on the movies from the 30th of January (After The Animated Series). As a heads-up the movies are not currently available as part of any of the streaming services in the UK without a rental fee of £3.49 from Amazon, Apple, Google etc. You can either get them there or buy the box sets from the retailer of your choice. I will work on an "alternative" for those who need it. :shifty:

It's been years since I've watched any original crew movies so I'm looking forward to that stage!

I watched Wrath of Khan a few years ago and I know I saw the whale movie as a kid. Otherwise I've not watched any of them.

I have watched Wrath of Kahn more times than I can count, basically anytime I had some time to spare and the desire to see Kirk and Co it would be that film that I would throw on.

I'll talk more about WoK when we get to it, but it's a fantastic movie.

It's one of those movies that trancends the franchise entirely. You don't need to be a Star Trek fan, or even overly familiar with Trek to enjoy it. It's not filled with science-fiction concepts, it has well written characters with well defined motivations and it's great fun.

Not a spoiler to say that I think it's STILL the best Trek movie.

The Lights of Zetar

Scotty should be up on a sexual harassment charge. Within seconds of starting the episode he was creepy and didn't get much better.

A daft but enjoyable episode. It probably made sense in the 60s, but storing ALL knowledge in one undefended locations? Have they never heard of external hard drives? ;)

Requiem for Methuselah

After Scotty, Kirk should also be up on sex pest charges.

A mishmash of previously used plots, but overall it was pretty good. There's definitely the basics of a really good episode there, a bit less of Kirk's sexual harassment and more on an immortal human that lived all those lives and this could have been amazing.

I did love the shrinking of the Enterprise, a crossover episode with Land of the Giants would be epic.

The Lights of Zetar

Or as I think it should be named: Scotty's Adventures in Gaslighting. "Ach to be sure lassie you're nae seeing the future, just youse listen to old Scotty now!"

It was nice to finally find out why the Star Trek fan wiki is called Memory Alpha though!

I'd agree with this.

A decent enough episode.

The Way to Eden is up next. :dread:

The Way to Eden

To be fair, it wouldn't be that bad without the singing. But the constant musical numbers turn it from a bad episode to a terrible one.

The acid plants on Eden were a good idea, in a better episode that could have been an interesting setting for a story.

I can't believe I only have 4 left until the animated series!

The Way to Eden

Like pulling off a plaster, best to get it over with. Utter pish. Should have just stuck them all in the brig to begin with and be done with it.

The Final Week!

Well, it's had it's ups and downs but we finally reach the end of The Original Series.

After three seasons of boldly going, it faced it's final frontier. Cancellation. With no last minute reprieves or letter writing campaigns to save it this time, Star Trek on TV officially came to an end (for now).

Prepare to say goodbye to the Enterprise as we know her because the next time we see her (In live action) she looks pretty different.

So, for the last time we have....

Sky Castles! Intergalactic Historic Celebrity Deathmatch! History of a doomed planet! Kirk's Insane Ex!

It's going to be a pain if Paramount Plus takes all the content from Netflix. I'm not sure I can be arsed finding it all on pirate sites. I'll pirate the movies though!

I'll "make arrangements" if things become difficult. :shifty:

EDIT: It's one of the reasons I'm making a point of getting physical copies of everything. Got TNG on Blu Ray for Christmas and just ordered the first four movies in 4K.
