I refuse to get another streaming service, and I'm certainly not going to get Sky, so I'll probably be looking for alternative methods when it comes to Discovery. Fortunately we've got a while before we get there!

Return to Tomorrow
Decent, and Nimoy certainly looks like he's having fun getting to play someone with a bit more of an edge to them than Spock, but like Moggy says the concept in general is definitely old ground now. How many times is an episode going to start with them standing on the bridge with a disembodied voice booming at them?!

Patterns of Force
Speaking of tired tropes... it's a Nazi episode! :toot:

I found this pretty enjoyable to be fair, the mystery of why the professor disappeared and then seemingly turned all Führer on everyone is interesting, and we get more exploration of the non interference Prime Directive

With the way Paramount are going, rushing ahead is probably a good idea as they'll end up removing it all from Netflix with no notice.

Patterns of Force

Kirk looks way too comfortable in an SS uniform. ;)

The episode shouldn't really work, Nazis in space is a silly idea, but it was good fun. The resolution was rushed though, all that set up and then everything was sorted out in a few minutes. This should have been a two parter.

Rushed is probably an adjective you could use for an awful lot of TOS so far, many episodes either pull a resolution out of their ass with a few minutes to go, or otherwise leave really interesting aspects of their story completely unexplored. I'm guessing multipart episodes just weren't a thing back then?

It makes sense back then I guess. People didn't have any easy way of recording TV and so if you missed part 1 or 2 then you were screwed. By the 80s people had Betamax/VHS and so could record shows they liked and were worried about missing.

Yep just watched that myself, stupid but fun! Not sure why Scotty needed to get pissed as well when the alien guy seemed happy enough getting sloshed solo!

Given that the aliens only took human form to capture the ship it seems like they could have just changed into something else again when it became clear the crew were strawberry floating with them, but there you go!

The Omega Glory
Oh lord please save us from the "God Bless America" episodes! :dread:

Well they've sometimes been guilty of making the inspirations for episodes a bit too obvious but this one was just painful. It's okay to base an episode on cultural realities and the ongoing cold war is clearly what's playing on their minds here, but seriously - calling the two factions the "Yangs" and the "Kohms"? :fp: Beyond that there's all sorts of cultural insensitivity issues going on here that make it pretty painful to watch

They had to prove that even advanced beings from Andromeda find it impossible to outdrink a Scotsman.

:datass:

Patterns of Force - It's silly and another excuse to use existing sets and costumes, but I do mostly enjoy it. Something about Kirk, Spock and Bones dressed up as SS Officers just tickles me.

Pretty sure SS Kirk was Winkles avatar for a while.

The scary thing was how well Kirk fit into the role of an SS officer. ;)

I agree with all of that.

Absolute stinker of an episode.

Forgetting the American patriotism and cultural insensitivity, it just didn't work as a concept. This planet just happened to develop just as Earth did, right down to American flags and the constitution?

The Ultimate Computer

Kirk & co go full Luddite and destroy a beautiful machine.

;)

After the utter dross of Omega Glory, this was a great episode. It was nice to see Kirk feeling useless and the Spock/McCoy bantz was top notch.

A generally unconvincing threat, but the episode is saved by the various attempts to distract the invaders.
There were any number of chances to knock them out and stop them, but whatever.

I'm feeling a wee bit burnt out on TOS right now. Finding it hard to get overly enthusiastic about some of these episodes. I think it's partly because I watched all of these last year and they're still relatively fresh in my mind. Mostly I'm looking forward to blasting through TAS to get to the movies and then TNG.

That said, I am enjoying all of your reactions. Season 3 (Which we are a mere week and a half away from) contains some absolutely terrible episodes as well as a few greats so it'll be fun to see if you feel the same way as I do about them.

Devlin really doing his best to get us hyped for Season 3 there!

The Ultimate Computer
As Moggy says this was definitely a step up from the terrible Omega Glory, Kirk getting pissed off about being replaced by a computer was a solid setup for a story. The resolution essentially being another "tricking the computer into killing itself" is already starting to prove a little tired though! Nice to hear the origins of Daystrom though - someone that will still be getting referenced when we reach present day Trek! :toot:
