Attention! We're moving onto TNG era Trek as of 20/02/2022! Click HERE to join us!

Star Trek truly is fantastic. It's been part of popular culture in one form or another for over 50 years at this point and has entertained and inspired millions of people over the past half-century.

So lets watch ALL of it. (Yes even the shite episodes  )

Starting Sunday 22nd of August (Though you can make a start on Week 1 now if you want) we'll be boldly going through every single TV show and movie ever to bear the name "Star Trek". From TOS all the way to Lower Decks, we'll be watching it!
Each week will be Sunday to Saturday and will consist of 4 episodes to watch. I did consider lowering that to 3 episodes, but it would have added another 18 months onto the total time. :dread:

It's going to take a while, about 3.5 years if we maintain the 4 episodes a week schedule and don't miss any, but the beauty of it is that there's no commitment needed from you. Beam in and out as you want to discuss each weeks episodes. Skip entire shows if you want (Though the more the merrier) and come back when YOU feel like it.

This is also a great opportunity for people who've perhaps missed certain shows, or never really seen Star Trek at all to watch along as well!

The good news is that (Apart from the movies and Discovery) all Star Trek shows can currently be found on Netflix or Amazon Prime (Picard and Lower Decks are here) so it's really accessible! Be aware that Paramount Plus is already starting to get back streaming rights for some of its shows (Discovery), so this most likely will change over the next year or two. I'll keep everyone up to date with where the shows can be found as necessary.

This Week!

I don't think I've ever seen an episode of Star Trek. Maybe now is my time!

Definitely join in Pancake!

There's something for everyone which is part of the beauty of Trek. Don't like the original series? Fine, try Next Generation, or maybe even Discovery. :D

We'll be in this for the long haul so feel free to dip in and out as you like! The Original Series should last us till Jan/Feb of next year then we have The Animated Series before a stint of mostly good movies, then TNG kicks off.

Other than two of the recent movies I've never seen Star Trek.
Don't think I can commit to watching all of it though! Was going to say I might watch the first season of the original. 30 episodes though :dread:

Good luck Devlin. This makes my Who club look like a quick trip to shop for some milk vs. the Christmas shop for the entire family

I might try to join in with the original series. I've seen the odd ten minutes of episodes here and there when they've been on Sci-Fi and I'm channel flicking, but I've never tried watching it properly.

Don't feel the need to commit to anything. Watch entirely at your own pace. The four episodes a week is simply to give the core idea some structure, so watch what you can when you can. :D

Good stuff man. Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Yeah. :dread:

That's why I went for four episodes a week instead of 3. It's a manageable amount to watch in seven days and it cuts 18 around months off the overall watch time.

That was kind of where I was when I first started watching them properly last year. I'd seen some of them here and there, but never made an effort to get through them all.

I think if you were to do this for Who you'd be old and grey before getting anywhere near the current stuff.

As a heads-up for those who are new to TOS specifically I would say to remember when it was made. We hadn't even landed on the Moon when Star Trek first aired and while it is considered very progressive for it's time, it's still got some things that would be considered utterly unacceptable today. Luckily this stuff is a very small part of the show and you'll generally know it when you see it.

Anyway I'll be making a start tomorrow I think. Plan is for me to spread the four episodes out over the week but we'll see how we get on.

Look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts on "The Cage"!

Thought I might join in when I thought the episodes were 20-25 mins each.

As much as I’ve been curious about Star Trek in my adult years (it always looked like the most boring thing you could watch when I was younger, but I find myself enjoying an awful lot of hard sci fi now and surely it must be good to have the legendary status it does), I could only really commit to 1 hr a week at most.

Most episodes are in the 45 minute kind of range.

Some of the pilot episodes and some of the finales can be a bit longer (I think The Cage is just over an hour) but they are the exception.

The Animated Series and Lower Decks episodes are both 22ish minutes long though.

But yeah, like I said no commitment necessary, just watch what you can/want.

Even if I'm sure I'll fail to keep up with the pace (past evidence is a strong indicator here - sorry Who Club! ) I'm really looking forward to getting into this!

TOS is definitely an area where my knowledge is patchy, I've seen many a random episode but have never worked my way through the whole lot from beginning to end so this should be fun.

I just finished episode 1, pleasantly surprised, I was expecting the first few episodes to be ropey as all hell but it delivered what I was hoping for; cerebral sci-fi with terrible effects and ludicrously shonky aliens. Glad to hear that not every episode is a full hour though, I would struggle to keep up with that.

Glad you enjoyed it. :D

"The Cage" is a bit of an outlier within TOS. It was the original pilot that was rejected by the network, which is why a lot of things change from the second episode, not least of all the introduction of Kirk instead of Pike. It wasn't even aired until the 80's I believe, but Netflix include it at the start where it most makes sense.

One of the things I like about TOS (And Trek in general I guess) is that there are a great mix of episodes. There are some with really solid sci-fi concepts, some that are just silly, some that are more action focused.

EDIT: I will say, the version of the show on Netflix is the remastered one with most of the visual effects replaced with more modern versions, though they do try and stay true to the spirit of the originals. It certainly didn't look quite as nice at the time. :D

Just done with The Cage myself. You can see why they rejected the original pilot, there's potential there but my goodness it's slow going!

In all honesty it doesn't really feel that different from a "standard" TOS episode - Pike is largely a swap out for Kirk, without quite as much of an edge that Shatner gives to the latter, Spock is broadly the same if a little chirpier, the Doctor is basically a proto Bones etc. The tone is a bit random, swinging from serious to comical at odd intervals, something which is hightened by the dated and stilted delivery/direction of everything, but I imagine that will largely be true of the main season episodes as well!

It's a surprisingly bleak ending for the pilot of a show as well:

"By the way those people who crashed here 18 years ago all died instantly, that one girl survived but we strawberry floated up putting her back together so she's basically living a life of torment. Our society pretty much destroyed itself through war years ago so we all live underground brain wanking ourselves to death because we've forgotten how to fix the bog and our plan to capture people to become our slaves and fix our gooseberry fool has kind of failed with you being a bit too independently minded for our liking so we'll just send you back off into space and we'll go back to sitting around imagining ourselves being happy whilst everything slowly falls apart. You cool with that? Okay bye!"

This thread has inspired me to revisit Trek, particularly as there are bits of Next Gen and Voyager that I've never seen. I think I might do it in chronological order of the series timeline,
though: so starting with Enterprise and then Discovery, before TOS.
