He was such a twat. You know somebody is a total wanker when they make Kirk seem reasonable.

Yeah Kirk is a good barometer for twatishness!

Friday's Child

There's probably a good episode buried in there, but it's ruined by those ridiculous costumes.

I almost cried laughing when they used the communicators to blow up the cliff. One guy got hit by a rock (that you could have outwalked), fell less than a foot and screamed like he fell into a bottomless abyss.

And those shitty looking bows.

It also felt like scenes were missing in places. It felt like I blinked and suddenly they were fighting from nowhere.

Still, not an awful episode, just clumsy.

Watched Journey to Babel earlier on as well.

A nice enough episode, elevated by Mark Lenard in his first appearance as Sarek. Not his first role on Trek (He was the Romulan Captain back in "Balance of Terror"), but he'll be back several times over the course of the shows and movies.
Basically any episode that delves more into Spock and his Vulcan heritage is worth a watch and this is no exception.

I tend to take a day off from TOS on Wednesdays, but I remember "Fridays Child" being another ok-ish episode but nothing particularly interesting. So that'll be Thursdays viewing I think.

I've had a lot of stuff to watch this week so haven't gotten to my final episode for the week. Will hopefully get to see it tonight.

I just wanted to say that this has been a great idea for a thread. As somebody that's never really watched Star Trek before, it's great to have something new to watch. Even the terrible episodes of this have been hilarious!

It's a shame that there's not many of us left watching/posting, but strawberry float everyone else, were the cool kids. ;)

Too right, we're 100% the cool group for sticking with this! :datass:

Speaking of which, I'm still playing catch up - here are my latest thoughts:

Catspaw - Please tell me this was some kind of joke Halloween special kind of episode? I mean come on what the strawberry float was this?! I kind of checked out about halfway through in all honesty. Probably a contender for my least favourite episode so far!

I, Mudd - Better, but my goodness Mudd is an annoying prick! The opening is actually quite well done with the Enterprise being hijacked by the android and taking them to an unknown location - creates a decent amount of tension for the crew. But this quickly dissolves into something which never quite knows what it wants to do, is this a "LOL Mudd's a character isn't he, look at all these beautiful women that the crew what to sex, what a load of hijinx!!!" episode, or is it something with more meaning exploring the origins of these androids and their evolving morals and understanding of mankind. Yet another story where the resolution is just "Hey, lets confuse/overload the computer!" which is getting a bit samey now! Overall still pretty decent and ditching Mudd with a whole load of nagging wife android's was a brutal move!

Metamorphosis - It's Zefram Cochrane! I never realised he turned up prior to his appearance in First Contact so that's quite cool. This feels like almost the template for a quintessential TOS episode - the special effect for the Companion feels like something that's been copied or lampooned a million times over by this point. A decent enough story this, and it's nice to see them spending more time trying to understand a new creature rather than just attempting to either ignore it or kill it!

As a general point something which seems to be standing out even more in this second season is the rampant sexism of the show! For something that we always tend to view as a "progressive" show (and absolutely it was in lots of ways) it's still quite jarring to see some of the attitudes and interactions on display here

I'm glad you're enjoying it Moggy (And Jenuall). :D

TOS is good in that, for the most part, even the crap episodes have something to make them fun.

More people watching would be great, but we'll hopefully see more engagement when we move onto some of the "better" series. TNG and DS9 especially I think will be more popular.

But I'm enjoying it as it is a well. :D

The Deadly years was good fun. Lot's of crochety old person acting.

Anyway, onto week 4 and the halfway point of Season 2!

Attack of the cloud creature! Scotty done a murder (Or did he?)! Tribbles! Intergalactic Gladiators!

The Deadly Years

Ridiculous but very fun episode. I love how none of them looked anything like they do in actual old age.

Yeah that was some fun "doddery acting" from everyone! Rapid aging is another plot that has become a bit of a trope these days, but it was pretty well handled here, I actually thought they did a decent job of aging the crew with the make up effects available at the time - even if yeah admittedly none of them looked much like their actual older selves!

Chekov getting pissed off at them constantly running tests on him was funny as well, even in the utopian Star Trek future they still can't miss an opportunity to pick on the Russian dude!

Oh and I couldn't help but pass some kind of commentary on this "item" that looms large in the sickbay: :slol:

Obsession

Killer cloud makes Kirk CRAZY!

As daft as the premise is, I really enjoyed this one. Kirk is a dick (when isn't he!) but who doesn't want to see a phaser fired at a bit of steam?

Yeah Obsession was pretty good I thought! Definitely one of the stronger episodes of the season so far, getting a bit more backstory on Kirk and seeing a bit more of a flaw in his character was good.

Also we get a healthy dose of red shirts dying in here which has been shockingly absent so far!

Wolf in the Fold

Spectacular '60s sexism, serial killer Scotty, a lie detector test worthy of an episode of Jeremy Kyle. All wrapped up with Jack the Ripper taking over the computers while Kirk drugs everyone.

A terrible episode but was crazy enough to hold my attention.

Wolf in the Fold  :fp:

I'd totally forgotten about all the Jack the Ripper stuff.

Utter nonsense, but it's reasonably fun. Not a good episode for Women though. :dread:

I love that the issue is resolved by beaming the guy who voiced Piglet into deep space.

The Trouble with Tribbles

That was quite something.

There was a really serious episode hidden in there. The Federation v Kingon politics and their jostling for planets.

But then they just filled the episode with furry things. And it worked, it was hilarious.

Special shout out to Kirk's facial expressions when the tribbles kept falling on him (a crew member must have loved throwing them at Shatner  ). And to that magnificent final line from Scotty.

It's a legendary episode. :D

Almost as impressive is how restrained they were when it came to re-using them. I think Tribbles reappear 4 or 5 times at most throughout the entire franchise. DS9 especially has a great episode, but I'm not going to spoil anything about that as it's just fantastic.

I had heard of the tribbles, but had no idea they were just squeaky balls of hair.

The Gamesters of Triskelion

Bit of a meh episode but it was nice to see that Kirk is always ready to strawberry float. No matter the situation, he'll strawberry float.
