At least they seem to be disagreeing with most adamant leavers.

Unilever: Closes HQ in London, moves to Rotterdam.

UK government: This is a clear demonstration of Unilever's long-term commitment to the UK

It's just all the well paying jobs that are going.

It's worth pointing out Unilever is now being split into 3 divisions, Beauty (Dove, Lynx) and Home Care (Persil) will be headquartered out of London; Food in Rotterdam. It's single legal status will be in the Netherlands. There will actually be no job loses at Unilever at all. By the looks of it they're even retaining their current (expensive) building on the Victoria Embankment. You certainly don't keep that if you're properly leaving.

Unilever's boss was on BBC Radio 4 this morning and said that it was for technical reasons. Unilever has been lobbying the UK government to change its UK takeover rules (which hasn't happened, and something we lag behind Germany and France on as well) and the Netherlands are also going to make some changes to their tax laws (though I think the UK would still be lower).

We will have to see how many jobs actually move over, because at the moment this has all the hallmarks of what so many companies currently do to avoid paying their fair share of tax, and the UK government has failed to adapt its laws in time for Unilever to stay - which would put the company on course for continued hostile takeover bids.

Unilever aren't firing any of their staff (7,300 in the UK, 3,100 in the Netherlands). Where they end up is another matter. If it's all the top posts, or thousands, moving abroad then it's a big loss to the UK.

https://news.sky.com/story/brexit-gover ... s-11290344

Sky News has established the Government has been signing a series of secret agreements with companies and industry groups over highly controversial outcomes of the Brexit process for Britain's trade border.

The attempt to enforce silence about outside discussions on the changes urgently required to the border after Brexit has raised eyebrows across industry.

A series of non-disclosure agreements have been forced into the process of consultation with the logistics companies that actually operate the UK border, with one industry source calculating that "many dozens" have been signed.

The development was described by Meg Hillier MP, the chair of the Public Accounts Committee, as "extremely unusual" and "a sign of Government paranoia".

Obviously it's all going so well it's got to be kept secret.

They just don't want us to know how brilliant it's going to be otherwise we'd explode from sheer joy.

When companies announce they are moving abroad, it is hard to know if they are doing so because of Brexit or for other reasons. Unless they explicitly tell us the reason.

But it doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in how “great” Brexit is going to be if companies appear to be jumping ship before it comes in.

Let’s face it, a no deal Brexit will result in a very large number of companies leaving the UK, European companies for obvious reason, but worldwide companies (Japanese car manufacturers for instance) will also move rather than pay the tariffs that will come in when they want to ship their goods to Europe. And continuing to make Lynx and Persil here isn’t going to compensate for what we would lose.
