Yeah, it's taken to be a uniquely British day of celebration, like most of Europe doesn't have some sort of Liberation Day or Victory Day around this time.

It's often not even seen as a celebration of the defeat of fascism here.

It honestly makes me so frustrated how VJ Day is forgotten here. My Grandfather was still getting shot at and kamikazed for three months after VE Day, and the vast majority of idiots nowadays just think this is the day the war was won, and have forget completely about the section of the army/navy/RAF (not sure if RAF was involved tbf) fighting against Japan. It made my Grandfather absolutely sick to the stomach until the day he died.

Yes. WW2-related holidays should be about reminding people of the victims of fascism and the human cost of defeating fascism once it takes hold in a nation, and therefore of the importance of vigilance against fascists.

But it seems that a vast majority in the UK (even otherwise nice people) instead celebrate it within a framework of patriotism and nationalism. And that creates an environment in which fascism can be resurgent.

Was sorely tempted this morning to post something from the end of ROTJ with the caption "The E stands for Endor in my house" but I don't think I can be arsed with both the stick I'd get from people without a sense of humour (ironic as we all know) and having to explain to anyone over the age of 55 what an "Endor" was.

Absolutely. I would be far more in tune with this day if the focus was more on pan European solidarity and unity over this nationalistic bollocks for example. Imagine the uuproar if I ran outside waving an EU flag

My girlfriend's parents have printed flags for all of the allied countries along with Pride flags, peace symbols, an NHS one and probably a few others I've forgotten. If you're gonna do it, I feel that's the right way to go about it.
