Dear Lord, they're all sat in their driveways singing We'll Meet Again. It's actually happening.

I didn't even know what VE day was. Never celebrated nor heard of it being celebrated. All of a sudden, neighbours are putting up British flags across their doors etc. Pretty sure they didn't do that last year. On the day, one neighbour played Last Post on their trumpet. A group of other neighbours were playing guitar and having a sing-song. It actually frightens me how easily manipulated the general public is. To suddenly celebrate something I'm pretty sure most people don't fully understand (if these Facebook posts are anything to go by), moreso for the sake of alleviating boredom during this time, all because they probably saw it mentioned on TV. If it's just an excuse to go out and do something, it's somewhat belittling to an important, historical day. And for those who are suddenly patriotic and pretend they know everything about it, well... I think Karl put it best in a previous post.

To be fair you should probably know what VE Day is even if you don't celebrate it. It's such a big deal this year because it's the 75th anniversary and the last milestone (i.e quarter-century) commemoration of the event the generation who actually lived through it will see. Add to this the wave of ultra-nationalism of the past five years and the government invoking the blitz spirit every five minutes with regards to coronavirus and you can see why it's so visible this year (it would've been anyway to be fair).

There's only been a fuss about VE Day because it's a big milestone one - the last one I remember anyone celebrating was the 50th. How time flies :dread:

I find it amazing that somebody wouldn’t know what VE Day was. But I’m pretty into history so maybe it’s passed a lot of people by.

I remember attending a celebration for that with my sister. I was only in Primary School at the time. They had a bunch of sports events and the army were there.

Thought it said "un-dying" at first and assumed this was the start of some kind of mutated COVID zombie outbreak situation.

Kind of disappointed really!
