ITT we share some of our favourite things with one another. However, you have to do so while abiding by the rules of The Favourites Chain.

The first posted favourite should be someone's favourite book.
Second, favourite song.
Third, favourite film.
Fourth, favourite TV series.
Fifth and last, favourite band/solo artist.
At which point the chain begins again.

You can't double post, or contribute twice to the same chain.
If you break the chain (i.e. contribute a favourite outside of the order stated above) then your post is null and you must post a funny video as penance.
You can post comments on other peoples' favourites and generally discuss - these posts don't break the chain.

The first person to successfully share their five favourite things is The Winner.

I'll start: my favourite book is The Scar by China Miéville. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Sci-Fi or Fantasy (though I'd encourage you to read the first book, Perdido Street Station, beforehand), it's absolutely incredible.

I remember hearing that PSS is really grim. Not read it myself as I like light-hearted escapism.

My favourite song is Vatican Rag by Tom Lehrer. If the criterion had been ‘piece’ I’d be able to give you something more serious. As it is, daft light-hearted Catholic rhymes ahoy!

Favourite film - Predator

There's far better films that I also really like but it's just infinitely rewatchable. Pure 80's action film cheese.

My favourite TV show is probably Red Dwarf. I know the later seasons aren't as good, but I could probably watch seasons 1-6 over and over forever. There are still some great bits in amongst the later stuff too.

My favourite band is Opeth. I've listened to Still Life at least once a week since I first heard it almost 20 years ago and although I do miss the progressive death metal days I thoroughly enjoy their new pure prog rock sound.

My favourite song is Nutshell, by Alice in Chains. It’s what I imagine the feeling of melancholy to sound like. Just genuinely a really downbeat but amazing song. That’s pretentious as anything of course, but whatever.

You broke it Cora! That was meant to be book.

I'll go the Old Man and the Sea. Always moves me, and is very short which I appreciate nowadays.

So, favourite song. Probably Coles Corner by Richard Hawley. I'm not from Sheffield or even particularly fond of the place (boo, Steelers) but this song evokes such a sense of place that it is beautiful. It's definitely playing at my funeral.

Also, some love from me for The Scar. It's probably also my favourite book. Dan, how did you find the Iron Council?

Favourite film - Jurassic Park

It melted my mind at 8-9 years old when it came out and I’ve seen it more than any other film. It has some great lines and has aged reasonably well thanks to a greater reliance on animatronics compared to CGI.

Favourite band - King’s X. My favourite for decades, and that’s not going to change now.

Agreed. The whole of Jar of Flies is pretty melancholy (and amazing), even more so since Layne died. I’ve often thought I’d like Whale and Wasp followed by Don’t Follow played at my funeral. Happy weekend, everybody.

Favourite book - oh God. Erm, maybe Men At Arms by Terry Pratchett? It's almost certainly a Pratchett, and Sam Vimes is the hero we all need. It's just whether it's Guards Guards, or MAA, or Feet of Clay, or even Night Watch. Gah.

I'm going to struggle when I get to bands. Do orchestras/choirs count?

WHERE'S THAT FUNNY VIDEO CORA

I had to do Old Man and the Sea at school, and will always resent it for that. I'm sure it was deep and meaningful and stuff, but at the time it bored the pants off me.

I'm a big fan of the Fargo TV Series especially Season 2. All the seasons are great but the second is probably my favourite, great writing, fantastic dialogue and great casting abound. There's very few links from one season to the next so you can jump right in at Season 2 and enjoy.

I propose minus points for anyone who doesn't give reasons why. Gives them an unfair speed advantage while at the same time being less interesting for discussion purposes. :capnscotty:

Mind you I've never seen Fargo and don't think it would be my thing, so, er... yay!

Favourite band - probably The National at the moment. Someone called them the purveyors of sad songs for the upwardly mobile, I think that’s appropriate, and speaks to my general melancholy feeling.

It's a similar vibe to shows like Breaking Bad where ordinary people get sucked into a downward spiral of doing worse and worse things in order to survive the mess they have made for themselves. Guessing you may not be a Breaking Bad fan either though haha

Favourite song is probably: Ray III The King - Kasabian

Big Kasabian fan and hearing this live when I saw them in Manchester a few years ago has cemented this as one of my favourites. Video is also good for a laugh with Lena Headey.
