Manchester City hit by more allegations over Uefa’s financial fair play rules

• Allegations concern City players’ image rights
• Pep Guardiola: ‘We want to follow the rules’

Manchester City are facing fresh allegations that they circumvented Uefa’s financial fair play (FFP) rules – with claims the club saved millions by secretly setting up a shell company to pay players for their image rights. The operation, allegedly called Project Longbow by club insiders, allowed them to save €30m (£26.1m) in marketing income, according to Der Spiegel.

The German magazine has promised to focus on City throughout the week and Tuesday’s reports suggest that City understood from an early stage that the FFP rules being introduced by the then Uefa president Michel Platini would affect their chances of becoming one of the biggest clubs in Europe. According to a leaked memo from the club’s CEO, Ferran Soriano, the club decided that they needed to fight financial fair play but “do it in a way that is not visible, or we will be pointed out as the global enemies of football”.

La Liga are already asking for them and PSG to be investigated again.

I’m sure the other prem clubs will look into this too. The City lawyer showing he’s a piece of work.

A further email, written by Cliff, was also obtained. A day before the agreement was reached, Jean-Luc Dehaene, who led a team of around seven UEFA investigators until falling ill in early in 2014, had passed away. 'One down, six to go,' Cliff allegedly wrote to a City employee who had informed him of Dehaene's death.

To stop shitposting and winding up Photek for a minute I'll say that I'd be very surprised if La Liga followed through on their threat to take FFP into a court of law. EU courts aren't the best but FFP is still essentially something where the owners of established clubs colluded together to try and player prevent wages from rising, I'm not certain that would stand up to actual legal scrutiny which is why the threat of City and PSG to take the system to court was such an effective one when "negotiating" their fines.

Giggs can’t even be bothered watching his own players.

Oh and Thierry Henry has had a disastrous start so far. Not entirely his fault as Jardim found it difficult to the end, so it was never a job for a rookie to come into mid season.

I very much doubt Giggs was being serious there. Seems like a very good way of not answering a question regarding your best player’s poor club form.

I'm not really sure where I stand on the Man City/PSG issue. It's been pretty clear for a long time they've blatantly been breaking the rules but I still think the rules are absolute bollocks, designed to maintain the status quo at the top of the game. If they were truly worried about the financial health of football clubs, as they said they were, they would have based the rules around debt and not around spending.
