To be fair to him, the photo looks bad but the video clears him.

Anyway Madrid lost. Solari won’t last another month. I don’t think it’s the managers fault. The squad is a bit shocking especially in the attacking third for a big team. Benzema hasn’t done anything for a few years now. Bale is always injured and when he plays is terrible. Hazard alone isn’t going to change that.

Rooney has had a booze and cigs problem since he was 16. I think he didn't realise his full potential, in a similar way to Paul Gascoine. I'd say he'll probably turn out like Gazza too.

I agree about his potential.

I know he was England’s and Man Utds top scorer.

But he was always a side kick to Ronaldo and then later on Van Persie. Even when we won it in 10/11, Berbatov was the top goal scorer.

When I first watched him as a teenager, I always felt he would in his mid twenties at least be in contention for ballon d’or. But in reality he was never in the top 10 let alone contention.

He was better than Ronaldo at one stage. But Ronaldo just had that hunger to get better, which something Rooney lacked.

He’s had a better career than Gascoine. Maybe it’s me being harsh, but I always expected more. Just watching him at Euro 2004 he was unbelievable as a teenager.

I think everyone just think life works like Football Manager, and that everyone 'peaks' at 29 or something.

In reality some people peak as a teenager and never get better. Its very concievable for instance that we've already seen the best from someone like Kylian Mbappe.

It's hard when discussing potential. When Rooney made his debut for Everton, if we'd been told that he'd finish his career as both England and Man United's top scorer, had won 5 Premier League titles, 1 Champions League and multiple domestic cups plus a raft of personal honours - you'd probably have assumed he'd realised his potential. The lack of Ballon d'Or podiums counts against him, but in the age of Messi and Ronaldo it was always an uphill battle for anyone to get a look in.

Listing his achievements is fair enough but I don't think he reached his potential either, and yes Messi and Ronaldo dominated the Ballon D'or awards but he was nowhere near them, it's not like he was Europes third best player....ever...

Agreed, but then think of the players that have been around during his career, some of the greatest of all time:

Ronaldinho
Zidane
Neymar
Iniesta McBlackface
Xavi
Ibrahimovic
Bellion
Scholes
Gerrard
Kaka
Aguero
Modric
Henry

I could go (so I will):

Lampard
Raul
Eto'o
Silva
Giggs
Ramos
van Nistelrooy
Pirlo (Pirlo FFS)
Cannavaro

From that list, only Kaka, Cannavaro and Ronaldinho ever won the Ballon d'Or whilst Rooney was playing, and a good chunk of them never got a top 3 spot, which is insane. Can't underestimate the dominance of Messi and Ronaldo. Every year one of them won it (aside from 2010), the other one got a podium spot. So everyone else, all the great players of the world were all fighting for 1 podium place (normally 3rd place), it's ridiculous. So yeah whilst Rooney never got a top 3 spot in the Ballon d'Or, neither did plenty of other greats.

It's a good argument though. I mean, he could possibly lay claim to being England's best player, but there are others in with a strong shout.

Yeah, I agree. When he scored that goal against Arsenal for Everton as a 16(?) year old, he looked like he was going to be one of the very best. No one had heard of Messi at that point (mostly), but it was probably those two at the top of their age groups. Messi is 2 years younger (31). Despite all of Rooney's achievements and medals, he's had nowhere near the career that Messi's had. You're right, he never had the desire...and I also think Ferguson coached his free will out of him, tried to make him more of a team player, particularly when Ferguson tried to make Utd more of a defensive unit than a free, attacking one (to try and beat Barcelona in the European Cups).

I mean he good, like really brilliant, but he could've been one of the best, if he'd been more dedicated and disciplined. His career was over when he was 30...he's missed out on 5 or 6 years there. Maybe he burnt out...but was that because he was playing professionally in the Premier League at 16, or because he was a boozer and smoker who liked his junk food? Ryan Giggs played 400 ( ) games more than Rooney, and was in the first team at a similar age, and he played until he was nearly 40.

Sadly, I feel, his peak was the 2004 Euro's, in terms of form/ability, rather than medals.

He had 2 exceptional goalscoring seasons in 09/10 (34 in 44) and 11/12 (34 in 43) but other than those 2 years he never scored more than 23 goals in a season. He wasn't an out and out striker though, and he was playing with some absolute dross at United for a number of years :slol:

He was a good player but never got anywhere near the top players. The potential was possibly there but he never really had the attitude that would have let him develop to the likes of Ronaldo or Messi.

He’s the modern day Gazza and will probably end up handing out chicken to murderers.

Rooney had the potential to be an awful lot better than he was but he got comfortable and didn't strive to keep on improving. He wouldn't get into my first eleven Man Utd PL era side anyway. Striker wise RVN, Cantona, Yorke and Cole are easily ahead of him.

Alberto Moreno is an awful football player. He’s far to slow and takes an extra touch for no apparent reason. Keita isn’t up to much but Origi and Sturidge aren’t offering much to the midfielders.

I'm almost hoping Liverpool win... Tired of the media jizzing themselves dry over Wolves and Nuno Esperanto Santo Gomes etc.
