It's just a gooseberry fool show from top to bottom. Who is making the decisions? Don't answer that, it's Woodward the bean counter.

He gives Smalling, Jones and Young contract extension but allows Herrera and Mata's contracts to run down so that quality players signed for a combined £70m walk out for nothing in the summer. But got to protect our braves English boys for some reason...?

It doesn't matter who the manager is, if that idiot is still calling the shots it'll just be the same gooseberry fool year after year.

You can only hope that the absolutely abysmal final months of the season are a wake up call to the board that cracks have to stop getting papered over with a marquee signing, actual planning and intelligence has to be applied to the situation.

 That's amazing. I'm having that!

Well I can only speak for the time I've followed the club. There have been some stinkers - Bosnich, Taibi, Veron (despite being class in the CL), Kleberson, Djemba-Djemba, Bellion, Obertan, Di Maria, Falcao, Schneiderlin, Bebe  , Depay, Tosic - but Sanchez sits at the top of the pile for this period.

Preezy wrote:Have spoilered the below "in the bin" list for United as I know most people are digesting the end of the season and looking forward to the cup finals coming up, and aren't interested in the clear-out of a dying giant that's become the laughing stock of the league ffs how has it come to this :(

My list of who I want gone:

DDG - he's dangled the prospect of leaving for Madrid in front of the club a few times now, much like Rooney did. If he wants to stay, he needs to sign that contract quicksharp. If he doesn't sign it, get what you can for him and bring in someone else that wants to be at the club. Plus he's been shite this season, which makes his contract demands all the more bizarre.

Lee Grant - who? Go away and stop taking the place of a young keeper learning his trade.

Valencia - contract is up, good servant but I'm glad he's going. Adios Tony V!

Jones - there's a good defender in there somewhere, hiding behind all the gurning and injuries. But he can't be relied upon due to his fragility. He's averaged 27 games a season in all competitions for United since joining EIGHT years ago (8!). He only managed 24 games this season out of 53. But nah give him another 4 years I'm sure he'll come good :slol:

Darmian - what even is he? In the bin please.

Rojo - a walking liability, injured more than he's fit and he's not very good.

Bailly - the Ivorian Rojo. Not shown enough to stay at the club, let someone else deal with him.

Young - the epitome of what's wrong with the club. Can't fault his effort and pashun, but his ability is far below what is required, and has been for some time. Shouldn't be in the first team squad, should be in the matchday squad, shouldn't be starting most games, shouldn't be the captain.

Matic - legs have gone, slows down the play too much and isn't mobile enough to play CDM.

Lingard - not good enough, regardless of his academy roots and apparent effort on the pitch. Stats don't lie, he doesn't score or assist anywhere near the level required to be a CAM/RW/LW in a top 6 club. He's 27 this year so the "potential" part of his career is over, he isn't going to get any better.

Pogba - the virus. He's our best player, but the juice isn't worth the squeeze. If Madird offer £100m, you've got to take it and reinvest in players that want to be there and are prepared to fight for the club.

Sanchez - probably the worst transfer in the last 20 years at the club. Just looks finished. His wages have warped the salary expectations at the club and it's poisoning the well.

Lukaku - what happened to the dynamic, powerful and confident forward that signed from Everton? Looks like a completely different player now. His first touch is awful, he isn't good at using his strength to hold up the ball, his goalscoring record isn't good enough. "But he puts good crosses in" I hear them say, as if that makes up for the rest. BIN.

So without taking potential new signings into account, who would be your preferred starting XI once you're rid of that little lot?

DDG/Romero (depending on if DDG stays)
Dalot
??? new defender
Lindelof
Shaw
McTominay (make him captain)
Fred (deserves another season)
??? new midfielder
??? new right winger
Rashford (if his form improves)
Martial (if his attitude improves)

I guess...

Thanks for replying, that's interesting. Would Herrera have made your cut if he'd stayed?

I also notice Mata isn't in either of your lists, but perhaps that just means he's become forgettable?

Herrera would have been a quality squad player, probably playing more than he'd be on the bench. Mata the same - happy to keep him in the squad, plenty of experience, but not a starter.

Disappointing ratings for Sky Sports yesterday; just shy of 800,000 for Liverpool vs Wolves on Sky Sports Premier League, and just under 650,000 for Manchester City on the Main Event, for a combined audience of 1.4m.

It always surprises me how low the ratings are for football on TV given the cost involved for purchasing the rights to show it.

Is it something to do with the make-up of the audience or something (as in, they're prime advertising targets)?

I called off his players' names as they came marching up the steps behind him....All nice guys. They'll finish last. Nice guys. Finish last.

It's the cost, people aren't willing to pay for it as much as the hype around it all would have you believe. Somebody posted a full article about it a few months ago that was quite an interesting read.

The ratings will really tank next year when Liverpool and Spurs lose a couple of games before Christmas and City stroll to 90+ points again.

Domestic ratings really seem to have collapsed in the last few years.

The current setup is quite boring as Man City are too dominant. You never really felt the other teams had much of a chance. Even Tottenham got lucky with away goals. I actually think I prefer the lower leagues as they're more unpredictable.

I've either won tickets to the final or had my details stolen by a Nigerian prince. It'll be exciting either way.

Advertising I'd imagine is the main source of income for Sky. However, if the audiences are dwindling...then so will the fees for advertising. 1.4M viewers is terrible though. Your average soap opera gets viewings of dunno 5M+?

Don't underestimate how much they make from subscriptions, and specifically, subscriptions from pubs, which pay £10-£20k a year to show Sky broadcasts.

Edit: This is from 2017, but quite an interesting article on Sky in pubs: https://www.theguardian.com/football/th ... ier-league

This caught my eye:
Pubs can save up to 33% on their total fee by stocking Molson Coors products, although the discount only applies if they hit a sales quota. A publican might then find themselves in a position where the only way they can afford Sky is by selling products they didn’t want in the first place. Chris Roach of the White Lion Inn is one such publican: “I receive a discount of £3,611 plus VAT, as I have sold my soul to Molson Coors via Carling to guarantee a certain barrage of their products.” If Sky decide to shift distributors for a better deal in a year’s time, publicans must follow them in making the switch, abandoning the drinks they have spent a year encouraging their customers to buy.
