That’s a very vague statement. How far do you go with who finds what offensive? We are reaching the point where we soon won’t be able to use many slang words.

I agree my opinion is irrelevant which is why I pointed out that I don’t use the term and don’t think a non Jewish person should. The difficulty here is that a lot of Jewish spurs supporters use it.

Return_of_the_STAR wrote:Personally I think Yid does not have as negative a background behind it as the other words mentioned. From what I’ve read the term Yid does not have an offensive origin. Whilst the N was invented as a negative term. Yid is simply short for Yiddish.

I would say the origin of the word is completely irrelevant to whether it is now considered an offensive word today though.

For example, Jap is short for Japanese in the same way Brit is short for British, but the former is now an ethnic slur thanks to how it was used during, and after WW2.

I was just explaining why I felt it was different from the n word. The issue with Yid seems to be that not all Jewish people find it offensive. Many have also never encountered its use outside of football. My Jewish friend who I grew up with knowing since he was four years old has never heard it used outside of the discussion around football nor have his parents. He simply doesn’t get the fuss about it. I think a problem may be that the majority of Jews in this country don’t use the term or language Yiddish. As it’s more likely to be used by a small section of the Jewish community.

Nobody wants to ban slang words. We are talking about racial slurs, not slang.

“Yid” has a long history of being used as a term of abuse against Jewish people. The very reason Spurs use it is as a fight back against the racists.

But for a Jewish fan of a different team, hearing lots of non-Jews chanting “Yid army” isn’t a fight back against racism. Especially when your fellow supporters respond with “strawberry float the Yids, strawberry float the Jews”.

Jewish Tottenham fans are irrelevant to the debate really, the debate is over the use of the word in football as a whole. And overwhelmingly Jewish fans don’t want to hear it.

As Baddiel says, this wouldn’t even be a debate if it was the N word, and there’s no real difference.

The people shouting strawberry float the yids, strawberry float the Jews are the ones with the problem.

He told the Jewish Chronicle: "You have to think of the mens rea. There’s a difference between Spurs fans self-describing themselves as "yids" and someone calling someone a "yid" as an insult.

“You have to be motivated by hate. Hate speech should be prosecuted—but only when it’s motivated by hate.”

But a load of non-Jews chanting “Yid Army” is also a problem. And it’s bizarre you can’t see that.

Ex-Wolves, Celtic and Scotland defender Jackie McNamara has had a brain haemorrhage and is currently in hospital - the odds are not looking great for him.

Bought a Liverpool shirt with Mane on the back from Sports Direct.

Turned up a couple of weeks ago and just noticed the letters on the back are peeling slightly. Is this normal or have I just been stuck with a shite quality job?

Either it's been put on a wash that was too hot, or they've done a gooseberry fool job, most likely the latter.

“The officials talk about respect at the start of the season and there was zero respect from Jon Moss,” Gosling told the Daily Echo after Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Bramall Lane.

“I thought he was a disgrace. The comments that he made especially to me and one other player – talking about the relegation zone and ‘you’re still in the relegation zone’, ‘you’re having one’, ‘your team’s having one’ this and that – and it was very, very disrespectful. I thought it was very disrespectful what he was saying.”

Of course I'm sure the referee never gets abuse or banter from the players, that clearly never happens ever so we should definitely focus on this one instance of a referee giving some back ;)

I think because of everything relegation entails, I don't think it should be a part of banter between refs and professionals.

Bournemouth are well known for their niggly dark arts though.

Sod them and their smug arsehole manager.

I'd agree if he was bantering the regular Bournemouth staff like the cleaners and the canteen staff that would obviously suffer, but he's bantering a bunch of millionaires of a club that will get parachute payments for the next 3 years if they were to go down, they'll all be fine. It's a classic case of them constantly dishing out abuse to the ref and the 1 time he bites back they're the victims and start demanding mutual respect. It's like when players give it back to the fans that have been slinging abuse to them all match and they get all offended, hard to sympathise with their hurt feelings.

Aaaaaanyway, Bournemouth will probably survive, there are amazingly 3 worse teams in the league than them

I don’t think the story there is players hurt feelings, nobody really cares about that.

The issue is that the referee should be impartial and is there to follow the rules of the game, not to trade gooseberry fool banter. By making comments like that, the ref opens himself up for people to point and make accusations.

Player behaviour is disgusting, but that doesn’t mean the referees should be copying them.

It's like when they had to change one of the linesmen(?) for our CL final because he got photographed wearing a Barcelona shirt the week before. It opens you up to so many questions about your motives. I don't expect referees to be robots, but what he said was essentially sledging. It's the sort of thing you expect a wicket keeper to say to a batsman in cricket.

If you believe in community based, fan owned football, and want to earn up to 4% interest guaranteed on a minimum £1k investment (5, 10 or 20 year terms available), there are just a few hours left to buy into AFC Wimbledon's Plough Lane Bond, which will see our club return to our rightful home.

Target of £5m is in reach. Around £400k left to be raised before this evening.

I bet that’ll be scrapped following the inevitable appeal.

If they are banned though, will that mean 5th place gets the CL spot? That could make things interesting.
