Really awful incident happening at this Tottenham/Everton game at the moment. Everyone visibly distressed about it, and Sky not airing any replays.

Son Heung-min sent off following a late challenge on Andre Gomes.

Indeed, ref was clearly swayed by the injury and all the players reactions.

Looks like he was put off balance by the tackle and caught his foot in the turf. Awful injury.

Appeared to have broken his ankle.

12 mins injury time yet I think more than half of that was for all the VAR checks.

I think every game I have watched Live this season has had VAR as a major talking point. All a bit ridiculous. If anything rather than decrease it’s increased discussions about ref decisions.

I don't get how it basically worked fine enough in the World Cup last year and Champions League last season but has been a disaster in the Premier League. There were certainly issues in the World Cup but that should have been a good enough base for the various authorities to get their gooseberry fool together. The main thing it's done is highlight the inadequacy of many of football's rules, especially handball and offside, and the sketchy quality of referees. I don't understand why they don't use the monitor.

The most disappointing part of how it's been implemented is how fixable so many of the issues are.

Have the guy doing the VAR role limited to a certain number of replays and a certain amount of time and if he's not seen a clear and obvious error in that time, carry on. If he has, (Like Cuttooth said) the ref should be using the monitor to doublecheck himself under the same restrictions.

If they put these ideas in, not only does it get rid of dreadful scenarios like yesterday where everyones waiting around for three minutes, but you're probably going to see more decisions overturned when they need to be, since the final call will be by the official on the pitch.

As a referee, how would you feel using this version of VAR?

I would not be comfortable with it. The PGMOL are using a different method which is not consistent with the rest of the world. I would not mind my VAR informing me I need to change my decision when it's a matter of fact. I'd be fine with that. But I would not be comfortable seeing subjective decisions of mine changed. If I was walking out at a Premier League ground this weekend, I would want to be allowed to go to my pitch-side monitor and make the final decision.

Is there someone to blame in all of this?

Mike Riley, the boss at the PGMOL. He controls the referees on behalf of the Premier League. Riley has been trailing this system for years and had all the stakeholders involved from the start. Yet we seem to be having more problems week by week, particularly when it comes to what constitutes a clear and obvious error.
So why are the Premier League trying to be different?
They want to protect their product, which is all about the speed of the game. They are concerned about spoiling that so they don't want delays caused by going to the pitch-side monitor. This is leading to inconsistent calls.

What is the solution?

Follow the IFAB protocol. If, in the opinion of the VAR, the referee has made a mistake on a subjective call, then go to a pitch-side monitor. Let the on-field ref make the final decision. If the PGMOL do this, then they can at least make a comparison from not using it in the first half of the season. That would let them see whether this change reduces the tension surrounding the system and creates more consistency.

Well I’m glad they’ve made an effort to protect the speed of the product and avoided delays, they’ve nailed that.

I hardly watched any games this season yet, but i imagine itll be a cluster strawberry float in a big game getting a goal disallowed ....3 minutes later!
