This is the worst timeline. :(

Apparently the two clubs are Spurs and West Ham.

I personally think at this rate the season will end up being cancelled. No promotion, no relegation. Start up again with a new season in August if it's possible and safe to do so by then. I'm not going to offer an opinion whether you crown champions in each division or not. It's surely the least impactful way of doing it.

TV schedulers really do lack any creativity whatsoever.

I know, there are loads of great films they could put on instead, like Outbreak or Contagion.

Surely the best choice would be World War Z.

I think I'd prefer the test card to Mrs Brown's Boys.

I doubt it will get declared as a void result, as the clubs wouldn't allow it.

I don't know whether to feel sorry for Liverpool or laugh at them if it does happens. It wouldn't but... still.

I imagine the worst that would happen is the league will be declared over from when it stopped and Liverpool will obviously be declared Champions as not doing so would just seem vindictive at this point. Even if the season was to continue normally the chances of them not winning it from where they are are tiny and I imagine even the other teams would agree they've been the best side this season by quite a bit.

I imagine the current standings will end up being the final standings.

Most logical thing to do would be to apply average points per game for those clubs still with games in hand, and apply that to their points totals, so that in each division, every team has played the same number of matches.

So in the Prem, Liverpool are champions, with the rest of the top five as it stands. Sheffield Utd would go above Wolves. Then the rest of the table is as is now.

Apply promotions and relegations, but forget about cup competitions. Delay the Euros for a season, then start afresh in August.

I like it, but I reckon it might be a tad optimistic to expect this perfectly sensible option to be chosen.

If predicting results was that easy no bookmakers would exist. Assuming that clubs will continue to perform how they have on average this season doesn't make sense for a number of reasons, not least because the teams will have different opposition to face. Most of the teams involved in the relegation fight still have to play teams around them and with it being so tight points-wise, it's not beyond possibility a good chunk of the bottom half could go down.

A similar story is true at the top end. Sheffield United are two points behind 5th (which would get CL if Man City's ban is upheld) and still have to play the four teams above them.

There are so much randomness that could occur and affect the rest of the games, I don't think it's a viable option.

That isn't the point I'm trying to make - I agree that the current standings probably wouldn't be the final ones.

But if you think about it from a legal perspective, it's pretty much the only reasonable option (assuming it isn't actually possible to play the remaining games).

If we cancel the season and decide not to bother applying its outcomes - i.e. no champions, no promotion, no relegation - then the teams who lose out will be fighting in the courts for their compensation. And they'd have a strong case, because they can reasonably claim that they'd have stood to benefit at the season's end. Their proof would be the tables as they stand now.

But if you apply the solution I'd mentioned, while I'm sure there'll be ensuing legal battles to follow from those that suffer as a result, their case isn't as strong, because of that very same proof.

Or, to put it as simply as I can think of: the likes of Leeds are more likely to be successful if trying to sue Football's authorities if they don't get promoted, than the likes of Norwich are if they get relegated. And ultimately, it's that likelihood of having to stump up that will determine their eventual decision, IMO.

Although having re read my initial post, I don't think I was specific enough - I'm not suggesting the average points per game totals should be added on to all games remaining in the season, just those games where some teams have played fewer than others. So in the PL, only the teams on 28 matches would have one game's worth of points added on.

The only “easy” decision in any of this is to award the title to Liverpool, everything beyond that is fraught with problems.

Most likely outcome I would have thought is that if they cannot finish the season then promotions based on current standings will be applied but no relegations. A single season will be played with a greater number of participants but with an equal increase in the relegation spots applied at the end to return us to normality the following year

This of all seasons the the title should be simple to decide purely because the gap now is so large. The relegation battle on the other hand is impossible to say one way or the other as it's so close but I honestly think if you have a vote of all the team managers if they thought Liverpool should be awarded the title if the virus does cause the end now they'd vote for them to win it. I'm not a Liverpool fan and I'd say the same if any team were in the same position.

It seems wildly unfair to have them denied for something they can't control.

Surely football just restarts when it can, and plans are made to alter the next season to make it shorter? I dont understand this restarting business, the whole worlds going crazy, why does this season have to end this year even? Just continue when we can.

I think they should just keep it as a postponement and wait and decide when it looks like they are ready to start a s we have no idea how long we are talking.

One slight issue with a long delay is it will reach the point where clubs rely on season ticket income and prize money to balance the books and this won’t be forthcoming.
