The big clubs need the small clubs to be competitive. Barca/Real/Bayern walking over the bottom half clubs on a regular basis just isn't exciting viewing. I know that still happens in the PL but there is more unpredictability in the PL because the smaller clubs get a better share of TV money than they do in La Liga.

American sports would be much better with promotion and relegation, they've got it backwards.

So there is an emergency premier league meeting today to discuss these proposals.

Whilst I don’t expect them to be agreed and will likely be dismissed I wonder if it’s just a ploy towards an eventual move to a European super league.

Hopefully they treat the proposals one by one and not as a whole, as there are some good ideas in there that should be considered.

Wait wait wait wait, let me get this straight - Man United vs Newcastle is going to be on TV on Saturday, but only on Sky Box Office pay per view?

Are they having a laugh? So people pay for Sky, pay extra for the sports package and now they have to pay even more to watch certain games?

Greedy bastards.

Yup. It'll only get worse too. Loads of people will still buy it and they'll make a fortune from it. I can imagine all finals will be PPV in the near future.

It's the 9 teams that currently have the longest stays in the PL. It's very arbitrary.

Yep, had this come in in 2008 or whenever, it's like Middlesbrough would have been in that top 9. And yet no-one's going to be counting us as one of the top teams, it's just a case of drawing up the ladder behind them at this current time.

Let's face it, a lot of PL clubs would be more than happy to have an American-style league where you have the same 20 teams in year in, year out. No relegation or promotion, let's keep the gravy train circling around just us.

For the really wealthy, big clubs. That's not enough. Why should they share things with "little" Burnley, Brighton or Sheffield United? No-one turns in to watch them on TV. They've never done anything! Where even is Burnley or Sheffield or United anyway?

This is a deal with the devil, and is giving with one hand but absolutely looting what they can get with the other. It's a power grab. It's overing a thirsty person water in return for a life debt. It's taking advantage of things - the league will get short term benefit but long term they'll have signed away their soul. It's an emergency pay day loan with massive interest.

It's not even the big clubs' £250m anyway. It's not coming from Manchester United and Liverpool only. It's coming from all 20 clubs, so it's even more of a pittance. They are donating other clubs' money for them, and asking them to waiver certain rights and privileges.

It's horrendous.

It sounds like most PL clubs, ex-players, pundits, journalists, fans, and the PL itself are appalled by these ideas. Some owners of lower league clubs aren't (easier to understand, to some degree) but hopefully the almost-universal outrage will quash any chances of this happening, and perhaps start conversations on viable alternatives (as something does need to be done on the finance side, and there's room for discussion on other topics raised in this proposal too).

Look at these quotes/paraphrases from Rick Parry and John Henry (via The Independent):

How can Huddersfield have the same vote as Man United? How can Blackpool come up and abuse their one stay in the Premier League [and yet] have the same vote as Man United and Liverpool?

As early as 2012, Henry was telling acquaintances that the sport’s fiscal basis was fundamentally flawed. It annoyed the 71-year-old that little more than a handful of clubs in the Premier League drew global interest. The Big Four, Five or Six – it changed over a decade - paid the bills. It was hard to see the point of the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool, Wigan Athletic, Birmingham City, Stoke City and half a dozen other clubs who came and went from the top flight. In American terms, the division was stacked with minor league clubs playing in the majors.

Good of John Henry to pick a team with as many Premier League wins as his in that curated list of clubs.

It's like they're actively trying to push more people to illegal streaming :fp:

And all because some games were given away for free and they don't want to do that any more for fear of losing yet more money.

Cry me a strawberry floating river, etc.

 Yeah I've been a bit slow on the uptake, only paid attention when it started to directly impact my viewing options, such is the selfish arsewipe that I am.

Championship clubs excluded. I get it. Rich owners in the PL don't want to bail out rich owners in the Championship. There is going to be a few not in that situation who will struggle though.

Who? The situations can be in no way compared to the struggles of L1 and L2 clubs.

Luton, Coventry and Wycombe, to name a few. Granted I don't know much about any of their owners, but given the amount of time each has spent in the lower leagues recently I doubt they're too flush with cash.

Eh? Why not? There are going to be Championship clubs relying on match day revenue that are going to struggle to make ends meet. Do you think every Championshion club has rich owners or something?
