Was hoping it would happen, but didn't necessarily expect it to (given interest from Arsenal) and also not this early in the summer. Great news :datass:

Saw this and immediately assumed Grealish was on the way out, what do you think?

I don't think Grealish is going anywhere, at least not this summer. For me the Buendia signing is two things: 1) a way to ease the creative burden on Grealish (we rely on him too much at the moment, as evidenced by our drop in form when he was out injured) 2) another signal of intent from the club and going in the right direction/moving forward.

Both of those will hopefully help convince Grealish that it's worth sticking around and that we're looking to be competing for Europe, which is where he wants the club to be.

Villa spend money very well in my opinion. Much better than someone like Everton who are only behind City, United and Chelsea in money spent over the past 5 years and still finish 10th.

People are saying it's the Grealish money but that kind of transfer fee is within a club like Villa's capabilities without having to offload players.

Didn’t their owners say a few months ago that they were prepared to spend big this summer? A few of my Villa supporting FB friends have been going on about it for a while now and it appears to be true.

Grealish isn’t going anywhere.

Talks between Nuno Esperanto Santo Gomez and Palace have collapsed, it seems:

But The Athletic understands talks collapsed in part due to a series of unanticipated demands from Nuno, with the vacancy at Everton another complicating factor.

How close was an agreement? There was a succession of Zoom calls between Crystal Palace and Nuno and even face to face talks in Lisbon.

Talks dragged on far longer than anticipated, but as recently as Tuesday the club were hopeful a deal could be struck with the former Wolves boss.

Why did talks collapse?
The Athletic understands that Nuno and his team made a series of unexpected demands.

The constant procrastination at Nuno’s end also raised Palace’s heckles, hardly representing the positive start to what was supposed to be a productive relationship.

In the end the club decided to pull the plug on their interest in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

I'd be fairly happy with Espirito Santo coming in if I were an Everton fan - he's got a lot of potential.

Agreed. As a neutral, Everton are a much more likeable club than Palace. And bigger. Much bigger

It's a definite shame as he was the standout candidate and unexpected. However Parish is not one to suffer fools. Particularly after having situations before where prospective managers have agreed to only end up elsewhere the next day.

Agents just cause way too much trouble to clubs.

If he wants all the current staff to leave for his own I think Everton would be the same eventually. Imagine telling Duncan Ferguson he's off because the new manager doesn't want him

I was surprised to see Nuno linked with Palace - surely it'd feel like a step backwards after Wolves, and the job's a headache before you've even started with all the player contracts expiring, etc.

Guess it depends on the situation. I don't think a club would also want to risk having half their staff gone should a manager leave for whatever reason. Can imagine the compensation amounts if having to sack them all.

It's a blessing and a curse I'd say the number of contracts going. It means there's a lot of capacity for a new manager to come and shape a team how they want. Also a majority of those out of contract weren't necessarily first choice (the full backs are the main immediate issue there, though I'd imagine Joel Ward will stay at minimum), so the issue isn't THAT bad. The problem currently is that the majority of those out of contract are waiting a new manager to come in so time is of the essence.

The real positive at the moment is the academy going leaps and bounds. So it's not all negative stuff regarding the things a manager has to be involved in.

Didn't pull up any trees at Roma. A team that, last season, could be relied upon not to take points off the top six (Roma finished 7th).

So he seems like the perfect appointment for Spurs.
