My mate met Shilton at a BBQ event once and asked him how he let a 5 ft 5 Argentina out jump him in 86, he didn't take it well

Is he wrong about anything? Who does go to a goalkeeper's testimonial?

Yes, great player. Fantastic skill. But as a human being he was despicable. No contrition for the Hand of God incident at all. BBC sport have posted an interview Lineker did with him in 2006 and he says “it wasn’t cheating. It’s cunning. It’s cheekiness. No, no it’s not cheating. I believe it’s a craftiness”.

No - it was cheating. End of.

He hated England and I hated him cos of that goal and his attitude ever since. Remember when he cheered openly goals against England or supported teams playing us?

I’ve said for years I can’t wait for him to die and when I saw the news I smirked and told my family that the day I’ve been waiting for has finally come.

Chelsea have a loyal servant coming up to 10 years who i imagine will have a heavily attended testimonial:

KingK  why are you such a strawberry floating angry man.

We got battered again last night and look like we're going down. Take it out on us instead of a dead guy who was possibly the greatest player the game has ever seen.

On that note where do people rank Maradona in the Greatest Players list?

There's no doubt that in his prime his was a phenomenal player who produced some beautiful football and inspired greatness from some pretty average players around him at both club and international level, but I've never quite seen him as the pick of the bunch personally.

He's number 1 for me. He was basically a better version Messi that could actually win international tournaments.

How many of us are old enough to have actually watched and admired Maradona in his own time? Precious few I'll bet, and I think context is critical, stats and YouTube clips can only take you so far. Same with Pele; I just accept they're the greatest players of all time because I've been told it so many times and I can't really have an opinion of my own.

He’s brought down by all the doping and the cheating in his later career but from what I’ve seen he’s got to be right up there with the most visionary players. Dragging Napoli to all kinds of success in the 80s is no mean feat either.

I don't rank him anywhere because I never really saw him play.

Check out my YouTube channel!
One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

England cheated to win the World Cup of 1966 with the help of a Russian linesman. So pipe down.

I remember watching that match with my grandfather. He was cheering when Maradona scored that wonderful mazy run. He did laugh at the hand of god beforehand. I was just 7 years old at that time.

Maradona’s hatred of England was down to the Falklands War. You can see that his love of his country shines through.

That second is the best goal I’ve seen with my own eyes? Yes it is. The greatest player I’ve seen with my own eyes? Yes he is.

He carried an average Argentina team to World Cup glory. And he did it with Napoli too.

I think that not being old enough to see them in their prime is something to consider in terms of understanding their impact on the game and culture at the time and is probably a factor in my ranking Diego below number 1.

But in the same breath I think I would put Pele at my number 1 and I was definitely not old enough to have admired him in his prime!

Pele is close to number 1 for his excellent work on war movies and boner pills.

You get to see them taking free kicks and penalties which is usually a bit of a laugh!

If I was Maradona though no way I'd have accepted an invite to Thermos-head's testimonial - Toni Schumacher springs to mind :dread:

Pretty much how I feel. I'm too young to have seen him play 'live', so to me he was just a cheat and a drug addict. I'm baffled why some people online seem so shocked that he's died though. He abused his body for decades - it's hardly a recipe for living to a ripe old age. Would've been more of a surprise if he'd lived a long and healthy life.

You'd have thought that after spending most of his career taking a battering from worse players who just tried to foul him that Pele would have been more of a hard man.

I'm old enough to remember Maradona playing. For me he is the best ever.

Pele only played club football in SA. Maradona played in a time when you got kicked to bits.
