It does feel like a token effort now.

Would much rather see some of the insane money in the PL be used to assist kids in poor areas at grass roots level.

Can see what he means given the recent spate of abuse still going on. Not helped by the tap on the wrist punishment for one or two.

It's always been a waste of time, and achieves nothing. It'll keep going though as it allows everyone to look like they're doing something, even when they're not.
Before every match they say "the players continue to take a knee, and the message is clear - there's no room for racism in football" (or words to that effect). It's just laughable.

I've just watched the highlights of the Leeds-Wolves game. The Bamford disallowed goal. :fp: It was a great strike, and whatever the reason for it being offside - incompetent officials, his knee being a few millimetres in front of the defender's boot, or them just ruling it off because they feel like it (feels like that sometimes) - that shouldn't be offside. Every strawberry floating week there's some bullshit decision.

Our referees and officials must be some of the worst in the 'elite' football leagues. It's baffling how much they get wrong. The 'not flagging for offside until the phase of play has completed' rule is really crap as well - why was this brought it? My understanding is that it's something from FIFA or UEFA, but I could be wrong. What's the advantage of it supposed to be?

So what do you think they should do?

Do nothing and go back to keeping schtum and accepting abuse. Politics has no place in football etc.

The same logic dictates that referees should either be able to spot when a players nipple is offside or simply allow that goals that are offside. We don't need or want correct decisions, the same way that we want to be allowed back into stadiums again irrespective of the consequences.

I always wondered what the endgame for taking the knee would be. The things that need to change would take several years to fix even if a lot of people weren't openly hostile to the idea at the present time, and at what point is society "equal" enough to stop? With that in mind it's not surprising that things are starting to fizzle out relatively quickly, but it is very sad that the typical obnoxious gammon crowd will hail this as a victory.

It was flagged for offside by the linesman. Even without VAR the goal wouldn't have stood. Not sure what the problem is here.

I honestly don't know. But kneeling for a few seconds before a match has exactly the same effect as:
Drumstick wrote:Do nothing and go back to keeping schtum and accepting abuse.

Abuse still happens whether players kneel down or not. Saying they don't accept abuse doesn't make any difference to anything. I'm not saying I have a solution, but when people say "hang on, we've been kneeling for months now and nothing is changing", I can only wonder what they expected to happen.

I don't see how this is the same logic, or what point you're trying to make here. I'm not arguging for any of those things.

Must just be me then, looked like his knee was the reason it was given as offside, which to me doesn't give an advantage, and therefore shouldn't be considered as offside.

Of course it will still happen. People still commit all sorts of crimes even though they know it's wrong.

Continuing to push the message in high profile ways should increase social rejection of racist behaviour and make it harder for banana splits to get away with it in public, reducing the influence it will have on children/impressionable adults.

Obviously, we need meaningful action to back it up, but messaging is and will always be very important.

I think me and you are in general agreement here, that if VAR is going to be used then I think marginal calls should go with the on field decision. But in this case, the on field decision was offside. So there's not really a case for overturning anything, right?

That's obviously not true. The reaction from so many fans shows that it does have an effect.

Will it solve racism? No.

But nothing will solve racism completely, players being seen doing something is better then them doing nothing.

I remember being mocked for my pre-season prediction that Liverpool would have a hangover year of things not going their way

At last!

While watching the game it felt like it was going to be our night but didn't want to think it because of it being "this" game.

Not getting carried away. It can't be another 20 odd years before we win there again.
