Exactly, this is not a phrase I’ve ever heard either.

I've definitely heard it used in American commentary when watching NFL and comes in different variations:

"The gas is on, now they're cooking!"
"The gas is on, they're bringing the heat to X"
"The gas is on, those Chelsea all-stars sure do hate those Jews real good"

etc

I've heard the phrase "now we're cooking with gas" a lot, I assumed it was an attempt at a variant of that. I've not heard it the way it was written in the tweet though.

Cooking with gas and bringing the heat are both phrases separately.

I don't think it's impossible that it could have been someone combining those two phrases without considering the wider implications.

Having the gas on then suddenly bringing the heat often ends badly TBF

Vlahovic is off to Juventus, Arsenal wanted him, They're going after Isak or DLC now.

Can't help but feel that City have already lined up either Mbappe or Halaand if they're not going after Vlahovic.

Does AFCON not bother with concussion protocol? Mané smashes heads at high speed, goes down like a sack of gooseberry fool, and stays on the pitch for another 13 minutes against a 9-man Cape Verde.

Who needs a concussion protocol when you've got the gas on and are bringing the heat?

10 sad stats from Messi's debut season in Paris:

– We’re over halfway through the 2021-22 Ligue 1 season and Messi has scored just one league goal. To put that in context, at this stage of the 2011-12 La Liga season, a decade ago, the Argentinian had scored 23 league goals, before ending the campaign with a career-best 50.

– At the peak of his powers at Barcelona, during the 2011-12 season, Messi was unthinkably averaging a goal or assist every 51.2 minutes. Even last season at Barcelona he averaged a goal or assist every 75.1 minutes. At PSG this season that’s dropped to a goal or assist every 111.8 minutes (all competitions).

– Messi is on course for his lowest goalscoring return since the 2005-06 season, when he scored eight in all competitions, while still struggling with injuries on the fringes of Frank Rijkaard’s Barcelona first-team squad.

– His one Ligue 1 goal this season has come from 44 shots. To put that in context, Tottenham’s Son Heung-min has taken exactly as many shots in the Premier League, but scored eight goals. Robert Lewandowski is scoring with every four shots he takes (23 from 96), while Erling Haaland averages a goal every 3.6 shots (16 from 58).

– That one league goal comes from 4.7xG (via FBref). Only four players in Europe’s top five leagues are underperforming more in terms of their expected goals.

– Still, Messi isn’t quite finding the dangerous shooting positions you might expect. He ranks 134th in players from Europe’s top five leagues for xG per 90 minutes – 0.47. Last season he was 10th in per 90 terms (0.70xG per 90 mins) and 6th overall (23.6xG).

– While his rate of five assists in the French top-flight is a little more respectable, it’s not quite the outstanding levels it’s often been. Thirty-nine players in Europe’s top five leagues have registered more assists than the PSG star.

– Two hundred and forty-seven players across Europe’s top five leagues have more goals+assists in 2021-22 than Messi. Last season, only Lewandowski was ahead of him in that regard.

– Messi is on course to play the fewest league minutes of any campaign since he was a teenager at Barcelona (2005-06), having been on the pitch for less than half of PSG’s Ligue 1 campaign so far (893 minutes). Is age finally catching up with him?

– He ranks in the bottom 7% for pressures “compared to his positional peers” – according to FBref – in Ligue 1 in 2021-22, in the bottom 2% for successful pressures, and in the bottom 1% for tackles.

Barcelona was basically club Messi so it's not surprising that he hasn't exactly achieved a smooth shift over to PSG. He'll probably find better form over time but it's pretty unlikely he'll ever get those kinds of stats again
