What a banana split that Aboutrika is. How do you try to educate people away from that? If their religion is a top priority in their life, what can you even do? You can try and bullshit your way around differing interpretations etc but it is pretty strawberry floating clear in many religious texts, so if they toe closer to the line of their scripture, it's no wonder they end up with views like this.

I have no time at all for accommodating religious viewpoints the second they cross a line like this.

Are there Muslim players in the league that haven't taken part in the Rainbow Laces campaign or things of that ilk? Trying to think of any headlines about it and nothing springs to mind. You'd think if players like Salah or Pogba were abstaining there'd be uproar.

That clip does really demonstrate how long there is still to go with this stuff, I think there are some parts of the world where it just won't ever gain traction, the religious beliefs are just too entrenched in society and law to ever change. Maybe that's me being pessimistic, I dunno.

As with the Poppy or taking the knee, things like rainbow laces should be an individual choice. It takes all meaning away when people are forced or pressured into taking part.

It really wasn't long ago (in fact it still happens) that people would go out "queer bashing" in this country. It also wasn't long ago being gay was illegal here.

Things can change.

Salah didn't wear them despite Henderson and Klopp being very vocal about their support of the campaign:

I agree with Moggy that it has to be an individual's choice, however it is disappointing someone with Salah's platform and influence opted against it.

Yeah I get that, just feeling a bit negative about it that's all. Having spoken about this topic at length with relatives that live in both the UAE and Saudi Arabia, I'm not optimistic about the chances of meaningful change in those countries.

Yeah things are pretty much negative everywhere at the moment. I don't hold out much hope that places like UAE or SA are going to change any time soon.

Having lived in Qatar a few years ago, I think that if anything, the country has grown more nationalistic, blinkered and thus ultra-defensive of anything they perceive as 'Western propaganda' in recent years. I don't think anyone going there for the World Cup should be expecting a warm welcome.

The problem is it's never that simple. Salah has the weight of an entire nation on his shoulders; he can't just casually stick two fingers up at the overriding religious beliefs of most Egyptian citizens. Even if he personally feels more enlightened than that.

It becomes seriously complicated.

To be fair he could, it would just be a hell of a statement. Not every sportsperson is Muhammad Ali. Or even close. Unfortunately.

RIP Ray Kennedy, hell of a career. Didn't know he lived so long with Parkinson's.
