Agree with this. A quiet year for big releases but Returnal was fantastic and should be in the GOTY category.

Game of the Year:

DEATHLOOP
It Takes Two
Metroid Dread
Psychonauts 2
Ratchet & Clank
Resident Evil Village

Out of what I've played (bolded) I'd give it to Deathloop by some margin, but it's a travesty that Monster Hunter Rise didn't get a nomination (and it appearing under best RPG is an indictment of genres in general). For point of comparison, Monster Hunter Rise has the same metacritic average of 88 as Deathloop, It Takes Two, Ratchet and Clank and Metroid Dread (Psychonauts 2 is the "winner" by 1 point on 89 and Resident Evil Village is bottom from this shortlist on 84).

Best Indie:
12 Minutes
Death's Door
Kena
Inscryption
Loop Hero

Haven't played any of these so I am disappointed in myself! I am planning on playing Death's Door when it launches soon on Switch at least.

For me I'm too often out of agreement at the nominations stage to then put any value into who wins - best art direction and best music for example should both have NEO The World Ends With You and No More Heroes 3 in them (which I'd also have put in best RPG and best action game respectively, and probably both in my GOTY shortlist).

I need to play Psychonauts 2, as soon as it's less than £50 on PS4... Predicting Metroid Dread or Ratchet & Clank to win GOTY.

Crazy that a game that could be knocked out in under year might win GOTY

Stuart wrote:2D Metroid could be knocked together in under a year, especially if it's the same team who made Samus Returns re-using their earlier engine work. And Metroid isn't a huge seller.

Plenty of iconic games took a year or so to develop, development taking many years is a recent trend. Yep, they did a good job.

A summary of the latest VGA podcast -

"This year's lineup is going to be… pretty good, I think we get a lot of the… 2023 and beyond games that will be announced and next year is going to be pretty big for games, so I think we got some big stuff"

"This year was lighter for releases because of the pandemic, but I think next year will be very busy, and that will be reflected in the show as we have a lot of announcements for next year and beyond"

"We will have good updates on some existing (as in already announced) games that are known but people wanna see more gameplay or content"

"More than half the show will be brand new game announcements"

A headline that will come out of the show is how before we just scratched the surface of next gen games, but now there will be the conversation of how much could be done with this generation with some of the games that are shown, points out that he knows for sure at least 2 next generation games that he saw will really trigger that conversation. Some of those trailers will be early in the show and some late

The first couple of trailers are "surprises that will make people excited"

Some of the games in this year's show were supposed to be revealed as far back as last TGA

Going to have announcements for some games that are 3 or 4 years out for hiring

Geoff also notes that there will still be games that he knows for sure some people will say "wait why wasn't this game there"

However despite possibly having people surprised at the lack of certain games, he also notes from his experience as a show producer that "As long as you have 2 or 3 really good things the internet forgives you"

The production team is asking developers about almost any game people ask them to show, even if the developer is unlikely to be making it at all for the off chance that they do

Geoff is usually very involved with most of the trailers he gets, often around a year out, and this helps them set up the show properly

On the topic of CGI trailers, Geoff says he is surprised at how many are still relying on CG trailers that are not representative of the final game, and notes that there should be around the same amount this year as previously.

At the same time he says that he also says that "when you look at some of the stuff like Forza or some of the stuff that PlayStation is doing that is as good or better than CG trailers"

He repeated multiple times that the team is constatnly working to find the balance between gameplay, trailer and CGI footage for the show.

Thanks to the live format they can be theatrical again, and they will use the live orchestra as part of some of the trailers.

Last point that stood out to me, and this goes back to the CGI/not real time footage concerns, is that Geoff specifically disucssed Hellblade 2's reveal, and how people did not believe the footage would be representative, is it CGI or real time rendered and so on, and says how the next time it will be shown there are bound to be the comparisons of how does the new footage stacks up to the original one, is it improved or downgraded and so on. The way he went on about that part of the conversation makes me believe that Hellblade 2 will have a trailer or even possibly gameplay at the show, but I am mostly speculating on that point.

I’m guessing he has lined up an Activision reveal (Something Crash Bandicoot related) and he didn’t want to pull the reveal from the show. Surely he has enough reveals that dropping Acti wouldn’t have been an issue and would have been a good statement

This is what he says:

Keighley said he is thinking about how to “navigate” the event’s involvement with Activision Blizzard, just as major game publishers have said they are reevaluating their relationships with the company out of concern over the lawsuit’s allegations and those reported in a recent Wall Street Journal article.

“We want to support employees and developers,” said Keighley, who added he supported people coming forward with their stories but also didn’t want to diminish developers’ opportunities to spotlight their games. “We have to think very carefully about how to proceed here.”

I think that's a totally fair stance to take.

The way Kotaku have worded their tweet you'd think Keighley was weighing up whether to come out in favour for Activision Blizzard. Utterly typical of their Twitter bullshit bait and switch tactics to pull clicks in.

ActiBlizz won't be a part of our awards show, except for the bit where we nominate them for, and potentially give them, awards.

Yeah, I mean it's obviously covid related but that is the conclusion you get looking at that list.

Absolutely no way! Tough crowd in here. Every game in the GOTY category is an absolute belter.

Sting is playing his tune from Arcane live and suddenly I care about the Game Awards.

(Hope they keep the auto-tune in, sounds awesome like Imogen Heap-stylee)

This is probably an easier thing to say when the only nominations they have are for Call of Duty, but if it was last year and Crash 4 was up for something, I certainly wouldn’t want to see Toys For Bob denied a nomination or award because of what’s going on in their parent company. And likewise, if I’d won an award in a category they were competitive in but removed from because of their shitty workplace, I’d feel that achievement forever tainted because I wasn’t judged to be the winner entirely on merit.

Tbh, I think Keighley will say some condemning words about it on the night, at the start of the show. He cares too much about social media perception to not, and won’t want any buzz around the event on the night to be overshadowed by something like this. He’ll want this to just go away. Probably won’t mention Activision Blizzard by name, but who knows?

Hellblade 2 should be actual gameplay footage this time out, wasn’t a big fan of the original but interested to see how the sequel looks in motion.
