I dont understand why the 2018 awards are held before 2018 is over and theres still games to be released. Would make more sense to hold it in early 2019 surely?

Would probably make sense as it would align it with the Oscars and the Grammy's

I think esports really highlight how there isn't a single monolithic gamer culture, when you see how so many of us not only don't care for them but don't even understand the appeal. We're certainly gamers, and considering how we all post on a videogame enthusiast forum I'd say we're definitely immersed in some kind of sub-culture.

TGAs feel like such a weird mix I think because they are trying to appeal to "gamer culture" as a whole, when really there is room and probably a need for multiple industry awards to fill different niches, much like you see in film, music and literature.

Witty biological-political hybrid jokes are the reason this place fails to cater to a wide audience

This is true, but apart from the microcosm that is this forum I've yet to find any cultural element or community involving games that appeals (outside interest in the production/industry side of things). I play games yes, but I would never, ever refer to myself as a gamer simply because of the baggage associated with it these days (since GamerGate, really).

EDIT: This is just me being cantankerous by the way. Each to their own when it comes to in-group association.

Just to add that when I say "we're certainly gamers", I mean nothing other than we all play games!

As a fellow cantankerous git I loathe the manufactured and deliberate edifice of "gamer culture" and see these awards as nothing more than the industry having a big victory wank in the faces of the people who both keep it going and who are held in such contempt by publishers through their actions. Oh, but there are some juicy trailers peppered in to keep #gamers tweeting and making open-mouthed reaction videos all night.

If any of you are voting, you should all vote for Dominique “SonicFox” McLean in the eSports category, they guy cleans up in multiple games (Dragon Ball z and he just won the Injustice 2 finals) honestly the guy is stupidly good

Plus if twitter is to be believed last night he donated $10,000 to his opponent so they could pay for their Dads cancer treatment. Oh and there is also the small fact he is a black gay furry, which he is very open about. So he gets a hell of a lot of grief too

I've never seen these awards as anything other than fanboy fodder.

Regarding TGAs, they may as well just announce RDR2 as the winner in every category it's in. On a completely unrelated note, did they end up adding the 'Most Crushing Working Conditions' award? I know R* were campaigning hard for its inclusion.

I love me some games, but I sure do strawberry floating hate gamer culture.

RDR2 is allowed to be a good game though Taf, despite the embarrassingly shitty working conditions and working culture Rockstar pressed onto its staff.

It's even allowed to be the best game someone's played this year!

In theory, games released in December should be eligible for the next year's awards but it seems like they've ignored Xenoblade 2 (which was released in December 2017) this year and I think it can count itself unlucky not to be nominated in Best RPG category.

Exactly, Smash is in a similar situation this year, Im not suggesting it will win anything but having an award show before one of the biggest games of the year is out seems very silly.

And youre right, Xenoblade was strawberry floating robbed, amazing game.

Also remember, this is a commercial activity.

I've worked for companies that run awards ceremonies, and certainly some categories are created to attract potential sponsors (rather than for any potential artistic merit). I'm sure there's a lot of esports equipment manufacturers who'd love to sponsor this sort of thing.

It's an awards ceremony with some cool announcements thrown in. I don't understand what gets people's backs up so much about TGAs.

It does seem increasingly daft that it's not in the new year though. Especially as there's no PSX to attach it too.

I'm interested in how things fall between RDR2, GOW and Spider-Man. I think RDR will clean up in most areas but GOW will take the big one.

I don't watch eSports, but I can get why people would like it, it's the same with real sports. I don't know why people see things so differently. Also, why watch some overpaid prats kick a ball when you can do it yourself?

My Games of the Year are God of War and Dead Cells. God of War struck so heavy a chord with me that everything I else I tried after it felt lacklustre... and then I bought Dead Cells. I bought it toward the end of August and have been playing it since.

Anyway! Well done to all those nominated.

I think I'd hate esports a lot less if they didn't insist on calling it sports, when there's nothing sporty about it. Just call it competitive gaming and be done with it.

Yeah, eSports is an awful name for it.
