Surprised FF16 isn't up for GOTY. Only played Spider-Man 2 and Zelda of those nominations but would have put FF over Spider-Man.

Not that it matters because Baldur's Gate is almost guaranteed winner.

RE4 should be nailed on GOTY but I should think it'll be between Baldurs Gate and Tears of the Kingdom.

I would say Mario Wonder does not deserve it's spot and that place should have gone to something else, SF6 maybe.

If it were possible to have anything like an "objective analysis" of the best game I think it's hard to say anything other than TOTK or BG3 would be the rightful winner.

I've played shockingly little of these lists, in terms of the GOTY options the only one I've really put time into is TOTK (150 hours, it's the GOAT), other than that I've played Wonder up to W2 and watched my son play the opening of Spider-Man 2. The rest? Zilch!

Having replayed AW1 (along with Max Payne 1&2 and currently going through Control again) I am HUGELY looking forward to getting my hands on Alan Wake 2 though. Remedy

One too many tbf.

System Shock Remake is a better RPG than Starfield, and it's not even an RPG

It's criminal that Hitman World of Assassination doesn't have a nomination in either Best Ongoing or Best Community Support. Bringing the trilogy together into a single game is great in itself and the new Freelancer mode is like a whole new game on top of that. If it was actually a new release I'd argue for it pretty strongly as a GOTY contender! Talk about favourite Roguelites of all time and Freelancer probably comes second to me only after Hades. (Side note: Hades II for most anticipated for sure!)

Objective by what measure? Popularity?

Of the GOTY nominations I've played Baldur's Gate 3, Tears of the Kingdom and Resident Evil 4. I agree on all three being very deserving of a nomination and all three are in my top five for the year, but my GOTY pick is Resident Evil 4 by some margin.

All three are very different games in different genres so it's hard to compare, but if I were to start picking flaws I find several in BG3, several in TOTK, and almost none in RE4. That's as close to objective as I can get and makes RE4 the clear winner. It's the game I personally enjoyed the most and the only one I have played through multiple times.

I'm so glad Starfield didn't automatically get in to the GOTY contender list.

I hadn't even clocked the lack of Starfield, that's quite funny

Hence the qualifier - "if it were possible", I agree that there's no mechanism by which you can truly objectively assess the quality of a game and to attempt to do so would be madness.

And so, considering all known definitions of "best", i.e. having the greatest impact, success, sophistication, refinement, evolution of the form, ability to entertain, compelling mechanics, frequency of launching NPCs into the air with self-designed contraptions, and (most importantly) the "because I say so" factor, the empirically provable answer to "what's the best game?" is... TOTK. :datass:

2024 looks a bit bare if Tekken 8 is one of the most anticipated releases.

Silksong not up for 2024 most anticipated because Geoff knows it's shadow dropping at VGAs confirmed.

A win for TOTK is basically just saying BOTW was so good we decided to give it GOTY twice.

Nah, it's more like saying "you know that game we thought was the greatest thing ever? Yeah, they showed us how much room for improvement there still was" :datass:

With the amount of games Xbox has got in development it could be anything. Could be one of the unannounced 2024 games.

I'm hoping for a new street fighter character trailer, some shadow drops and lots of retro collections. Probably too soon for MGS collection 2.

Wish my image sig would work

Could be the reveal of the Slim Series X that leaked earlier this year? They’ve shown consoles at TGA’s before.

According to the leak the consoles won't be announced until "E3" at the earliest -
