I've bought one game since getting my PS5 (on launch day) - Ratchet and Clank. Otherwise it's entirely been PS+, which for the most part has meant playing enhanced versions of PS4 games. My last "buy everything" generation was Dreamcast/PS2/XBox/Gamecube. It very quickly became apparent I had spent plenty of money and would never play half of what I had. And I had a lot more spare time back then.

The funny thing is that for as much as I love my PS5 and play the gooseberry fool out of it, the two games I got with it at launch, which are still among the best games for it (Miles Morales and Demon’s Souls), I’ve hardly touched at all. I don’t even think they’re installed anymore. I don’t know if this is because they’re the only two I have on disc or if it’s just coincidence.

I obviously have no issue buying a game to heap into the backlog (if I see a deal), or to add to a collection of a series I like but haven’t caught up with, or simply because I want to play it while it’s the hot topic, with the view to giving it the real shake at a later time if it’s not quite compelling enough to pause a play through of what I’m currently on.

The only difficulty really is having the discipline to get to the end of anything without jumping on something else. Which can be a little frustrating, but to be honest, when I think of the sheer number of brilliant games I own that I’m dying to play, I feel really good about it. Knowing that they’re all there in the library and waiting to go, knowing that I’m safe from ever having to give up having new, fantastic gaming experiences for financial reasons? It’s just… I dunno how to describe it other than the feeling when you’re inside a warm house with an amply stocked fridge in a blizzard.

I find buying a game means i am more likely to commit to completing it. Got to get your moneys worth.

With Game Pass, the quicker you drop a game the more cost effective the service becomes - you are literally able to play more for your monthly subscription price.

I have bought 4 x PS5 games. Hopefully my PS5 turns up soon :shifty:

I've never actually thought about that. I mean if I look at my gaming backlog, 95% of it is in Gamepass and 90% of that is Xbox/Bethesda exclusive stuff so I know it's never going anywhere and I kind of see myself as being a life time subscriber to that service, of course if a game leaves that I want ill buy but this entire thread is pretty much based around Switch and Playstation which is fair enough but it's crazy that this 'problem' doesn't exist with people who have GP.

I supplement GP with some stuff on sale, I recently got RE Village but I don't feel like I want to play it more than anything else just because I purchased it. The backlog is real though.

I don't buy as many games as I used to, but I am committed to playing games I do buy sooner rather than much later.

Point in case I recently bought for the Series S, Saints Row IV: Re-elected (which I began playing that day) and the Resident Evil 2/Resident Evil 3 bundle. While I've already played and completed 2 on the PS4 I wanted to give 3 a go and at £21 for the two it was a bargain. Friday night I'll be starting 3.

Yeah I totally get this feeling, I love knowing I have a selection of literally 100's of games to choose from to play whenever I want. For instance, now it's coming up to Christmas, I'll fancy playing Christmas NIGHTS at some point, knowing it's right there on my XsX waiting to go whenever I want is a satisfying feeling.

I always aim to complete any game I have started and got more than a couple hours into, it's hard when I have started a game and still playing it 2 weeks later as my mind starts to think about the next thing I want to play even if I am still enjoying the game I am currently playing

Solution to all your time-strapped issues: only own one machine. :datass: And don't replay stuff. And only really play single-player games. And be really picky.

When anyone ever talks about their 'backlog' consisting of games they've purchased but haven't got around to and that list is more than one game I automatically categorize that person as a complete strawberry floating melon.

Good topic Jawa and definitely something to consider joining no matter what someone’s budget is. In the last few months I reckon I’ve bought 2 games so could EASILY stick to 10 games over the next year.

Having the digital PS5 helps me really consider whether I need a game or not as I know that its mine to keep. This has genuinely helped me as I would’ve been all over those Tesco deals if I had the disc version.

Let’s make it 8 though. Feel free to add my commitment to the OP. 8-)

Wow! Great to have you on-board, Prototype!

I've logged our details in the opening post. Just let me know if and when you make a purchase and I'll update it. Hey, I may even log down the titles and formats of the games that we buy... just to give us an idea on how we've expanded our game collections :-).

I suspect that this could get tough at certain times. It might be hard to hold off from a tempting purchase... let's see how it goes!

If anyone else is intrigued and would like to try this approach, just pop your details into the thread and I'll add 'em into the opening post.

I just posted this in the bargains thread:

jawa_ wrote:Biomutant for PS4 is £15.99 at Amazon. Evolve here.

I was so tempted as it's a game I'd like to try at an attractive price. But... I'm resisting. Is it really a game that could take one of my twelve available slots? Dang, the struggle is real.

Hey, folks, recently I've been buying more games than I can really afford and I want to sort it out.

> I am going to make a commitment to only purchase a maximum of twelve games over the next twelve months. I could buy twelve this afternoon or just one in the next six months... it doesn't matter as long as the "maximum of twelve" is met.

> To help me achieve this goal I will post here whenever I do purchase a game. I may also post when I resist a purchase, just as a way of keeping my motivation going.

So, my commitment starts now.

If anyone else would like to join in by making a game-buying commitment, please feel free to post the details and then also update in this thread. We can do this together!

"We're comitted to this goal!"

GRcadian / Max games purchase in next twelve months / Games bought so far

jawa / 12 / 0
Prototype / 8 / 0

You can add me if you like Jawa. From this point I'll be aiming for a total of just 6 new games over the next 12 months.
