I wrestled over my GOTY choice; I got a huge buzz from the thrilling OnRush, loving the pace and vibrancy, but, when it came to the crunch, the storyline, characters and touching moments of Night in the Woods edged it into the top spot.

PES is, with my focus exclusively upon the online play, better than ever in my eyes and takes the multiplayer award. And with Animal Crossing... I'm excited, but nervously so. I pray it follows the expansive play of New Leaf / Welcome amiibo! rather than the gouging-for-money Pocket Camp. I'm also keen to see Metro Exodus (even though I'll be scared etc) and Rage 2 (could this be Mad Max 2? :o ).

Pro Evo over Rocket League (Switch was this year?) Shocking.

 . I did think of RL - I'm starting to really enjoy it at our Tuesday sessions! - but the joy/pain mixture of PES always draws me in!

These are probably a little bit different to everyone elses choices but I'm fairly limited in my gaming options these days.

Best visuals:Marvels Spiderman
Best audio:Marvels Spiderman
Best multiplayer:Nidhogg 2
Most anticipated game:Resident Evil 2
GRcade Game of the Year 2018: Marvels Spiderman

I've had a year of not really playing anything from this year to any degree apart from Far Cry 5 and Spiderman, which I've nearly platinumed. It looks and sounds amazing, I love how the music swells as you start swinging, and all the ambient noises and sounds really bring the city alive. God of War runs a close 2nd in the visual department but this grabs it.

Nidhogg 2 was played for an entire weekend when some friends and I got together and I haven't laughed like that in a game for years!

Best visuals: Spider-Man
Best audio: RDR2
Best multiplayer: Fortnite Battle Royal
Most anticipated game: Cyberpunk 2077
GRcade Game of the Year 2018: Spider-Man

Going to fill the rest in later. Yet to play Spider-man and if I’m being honest I’ve had the most fun with Fortnite again :3

Best visuals: Spider-Man - It's a very, very pretty game. And the photo mode is just ridiculously cool.

Best audio: Tetris Effect - Nothing could possibly come close to this, the music is so entwined and essential to the experience.

Best multiplayer: Don't think I've played a great deal of any multiplayer this year. Most fun, probably Super Mario Party with the kids.

Most anticipated game: Ace Combat 7. It's all about Kenny Loggins, buzzing the tower, aviator shades and gay porn volleyball.

GRcade Game of the Year 2018: Tetris Effect - I've only played it for a couple of hours but I can't remember a game that has overwhelmed me so much and that's without playing it on VR yet. It's incredible. An absolute work of art wrapped in the most engrossing gameplay ever devised coupled with a soundtrack from heaven. I've spent the last few months deriding all the glowing tweets that have been retweeted, the amount of glowing praise just seemed ridiculous. It's just Tetris for strawberry floats sake. But I was wrong, Mizuguchi is a genius.

Best visuals: Octopath Traveller, a relatively mediocre game but the ‘HD2D’ stuff really works. Glorious.

Best audio: Celeste, a no-brainer since it’s the only game soundtrack I’ve bought this year.

Best multiplayer: Towerfall (Switch), I’ve not played Smash yet but this came to Switch in 2018 and my high expectations have been very much met.

Most anticipated game: Metroid Prime 4, Metroid Prime remains one of my favourite games ever and I’m VERY excited for the series’ return! Just none of 3’s dreadful NPCs kthnx.

GRcade Game of the Year 2018: Celeste, because it rejuvenated the entire 2D platforming genre for me and because OR said he’d break my legs if I didn’t.

:toot:

Great shout on Towerfall too, it's one of my favourite all-time competitive games

I mostly bought it to support MMG after his bang-up job with Celeste, but it’s gone down a storm. A confusing, hectic storm of death.

Miz is still a genius but Astro Bot has usurped Tetris as my GOTY. I've not played anything like it before even in other VR games. It's astonishing. VR will only get better in the future and after playing World 2-2 in AB then I can't wait.

Best visuals: Spyro Reignited Trilogy
Best audio: Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Best multiplayer: Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Most anticipated game: Metroid Prime 4
GRcade Game of the Year 2018: Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Yeah, a lot of love for the new Smash. Wasn't even planning on getting it for the longest time, but I ended up buying a Switch for it.

The tracklist in Smash games have always been good but I feel like with Ultimate it's taken another big step, like Brawl had over previous Smash games (in the music department at least). Surprising and amazing to see tracks like Circle of the Moon's opening level theme and Roy's theme from the Japan-only FE6.

Multiplayer is so much better than it's been for ages thanks to faster gameplay and better mechanics, modes like squad-strike and a strong stage list. There aren't too many straight-up new stages, but they did also take some of the better 3DS-only stages. The online is still plagued with a bad netcode and way worse match-making than even Smash Wii U/3DS, but Arenas offer a lot more than the old lobbies and can be open to anyone for some custom games vs randoms too.

I'm not actually too interested in getting the Spyro remaster but I have seen a ton of gameplay of it, and if there's one thing they captured perfectly it's the visuals bar a couple of character redesigns.

As for Metroid Prime 4 I'm also worried it might not be that great, but I'm still very curious to see what it'll be like nonetheless.

Happy new year! There’s still time to get your votes in for the awards.

With that, I should probably get mine in.

Best visuals: Red Dead Redemption 2
Best audio: Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Best multiplayer: Overcooked 2
Most anticipated: Luigi’s Mansion 3 (plumped for this over Yoshi and Fire Emblem as I’m intrigued to see where they take it, and this has the most scope for innovation).
Game of the Year: Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Best visuals: GOW - Just stunning. RDR2 is also a close one. I see a lot of love for Spiderman. But It doesn't hold a candle to those two games in my eyes.
Best audio: RDR2 - The voice acting is on point, the sounds of the wilderness make it feel alive and the soundtrack when it kicks in makes you feel like a real cowboy.
Best multiplayer: N/A didn't play any
Most anticipated game: The Last of Us 2
GRcade Game of the Year 2018: It's a tough one between GOW and RDR2 but i'm going to have to say GOW purely from the perspective of how surprised I was by it after not expecting much. The story was engrossing, The gameplay was always engaging. It was just epic.

-

On another note. I really believe that 2018 was an incredible year for gaming. Especially in the art of storytelling.
