The GRcade Game of the Year Awards 2018

Yeah, sorry – it's a bit early, but I'm off on holiday at the start of December so wanted to make sure I did this before I went away.

It's really simple as always to cast your vote in the only game awards that really matter.

What to do now:

1. Copy and paste the voting form (below), fill in your nominations, and post it in this thread. You don’t have to give your reasons, but if you do it makes for a better discussion.
2. You don’t need to vote in every category, just the ones you feel confident to make a nomination.
3. Only one nomination per category please. If you put multiple votes in, I shall just count the first one mentioned.
4. Voting closes at 11.59pm on 13 January 2019, so there is plenty of time to get your votes in.

Voting form:

Best audio:
Best multiplayer:

Best visuals: Marvel’s Spider-Man
Best audio: Celeste
Best multiplayer: Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Most anticipated game: Resident Evil 2 Remake
GRcade Game of the Year 2018: Marvel’s Spider-Man

My GOTY was close between Spidey or Celeste but Spidey nicks it as i’ve been a fan since childhood and this is the definitive Spidey experience in my eyes. I will vote for Celeste in the best audio category though as it’s got a fantastic soundtrack that really fits in well with the game as you play through .

How about adding a 'Best game not released during 2018 that you've played' or will that result in loads of different games and no clear winner.

Yeah I've really not bought many new games at all this year either, one I haven't really enjoyed (Octopath Traveller) or not played (XC2 Torna DLC). Only game I've played and loved so far is Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu but that doesn't deserve it in every category but anyway here goes, I'll amend later if I fancy it.

Best visuals: I've not played it (seen it being played mind) but Red Dead Redemption 2 looks stunning.
Best audio: This is one area Pokémon Let's Go does deserve it, the remastered score is just superb and brings back all those memories from playing Red and Blue for the first time.
Best multiplayer: Don't really play multiplayer games these days so I wouldn't even know what to vote for.
Most anticipated game: Animal Crossing Switch
GRcade Game of the Year 2018: From what I've played it'll have to be Pokémon Let's Go

Japan wins again, Don't think I bought a single western-developed non-indie game this year

Best visuals: Red Dead Redemption 2.
Best audio: Errrrrrrrrr. Can't really comment on this can I?
Best multiplayer: Nothing. Haven't played one this year.
Most anticipated game: The Last of Us 2 and Resident Evil 2 remake.
GRcade Game of the Year 2018: Red Dead Redemption 2.

RDR2 is stunning. A masterpiece in storytelling, graphics, game world, characters. After completing it, I tried to play GTAV and other big sandbox games and all I can think is "This isn't as great as RDR2."

My top 3 games this year:
1) Red Dead Redemption 2.
2) Spider-Man (PS4)
3) Astro Bot (PSVR)

I'm sure God of War will be up there when I'm in the mood to play that game.

Best visuals: Read Dead Redemption 2 - Not really got much to say in this category. It's one of the few game this year where I've been blown away by how good everything looks.

Best audio: Tetris Effect - For me audio has really came to the fore with VR in a way that I've never really cared about in normal games. Beat Saber is good shout for this as well, but Mizuguchi absolutely nails the synaesthasia with this. Arguably the game he's been destined to make for me.

Best multiplayer: N/A Not played anything MP at all this year.

Most anticipated game: Metroid Prime 4 - Forget your Zelda, Pokemon, Smash and Mario. Metroid is the Nintendo franchise I love more than any other and a new Prime game is so rare in that series that it couldn't be anything but my most anticipated game.

GRcade Game of the Year 2018: Spider-Man. Insomniac absolutely nailed everything about it this game and it has one defining property that gives it the edge over God of War and Red Dead Redemption. It's fun. Both GOW and RDR2 are technical masterpieces and utterly phenomenal pieces of work, but I can't say I had much "fun" with them. Spider-Man gave me fun by the gallon. Even traversing the game world is enjoyable, not to mention the combat, extensive but not ridiculous side content and overall level of polish.

Honorable Mention: Astro Bot Robot Rescue - It was so very close to edging out Spider-Man. If Spider-Man had been slightly worse, or a bit iffy in places then Astro Bot would have walked this. Whilst I do agree with the description of this being VRs "Mario 64" moment (It really is that good), in reality it plays far more like Mario 3D World. If the Playroom Astro Bot level was a proof of concept then this is the successful execution of that concept. It's an utter joy from the moment you turn it on, with character and charm oozing from every corner. It's level designs are inventive and often very clever. If you have PSVR then this is as close to an essential purchase as anything I can think of.
