I've recently started a Harry's subscription and their razors seem hellishly sharp. Probably the closest shave I've had for ages (usually use Hydro 5s) and the price seems pretty reasonable compared to WS/Gillette. The shave gel in the trial pack is quite nice too.
Fudge Hair Shaper is my staple. Decent hold if you're hair isn't too long (which mine is now ), your hair still feels soft and you can put your hands through it, and it doesn't make it look/feel greasy. It also smells of caramel.

Ive noticed that the more you keep up on trimming it, the thicker it grows everywhere. I have a patchy face in spots but even I have full cover now, if patchiness is a concern of yours.
I guess it just takes a bit to train the hair away from being soft after years of clean shaves.
One blades are brilliant. Everyone who has a beard/stubble should own one. I got the one blade pro, not the very top one but the one just below that, for about £30. Bargain.
