I've always been a fan of Famitsu's (a+b+c+d)/40 system.

Actually, this is probably the best review system that I've ever seen. Shame that it requires 4x the amount of work though, so is unlikely to ever become widespread.

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.

Although I don't always agree with their scores all of the time I like the Edge way. If a game gets a 9 or 10 in Edge, I know I will almost certainly enjoy it and that is a genuine must buy title.

Mine would be Game A is better than game B or Worse than game C etc. When comparing it to another game in the same genre.

You may joke, but there's perhaps something to be said for a "rating" system that was literal and not numeral, eg, summarise a game with "Good", "Fantastic", "Poor", "Innovative but Unpolished", etc.

Saint's Row 2 - It's like GTA, but less polished and much more fun.

I was just going to say comparisons would be more effective. Five well-written sentences is all it takes to outdo a number.

Why would 5 be an average? A 7 is deemed 'average' because a lot of games score 7. If people awarded 6s more often than 7s, then 6 would become the average mark. Theoretically.

5 isn't an average score just because it is the midpoint of the scale.

Who decides a purchase off one magazine score anyway?

I go through about five or six reviews in depth when I'm unsure, I'll also read up on previews, look at Gametrailers, read other forum's opinions and play the demo if it's available.

It should be, though, otherwise the scale is lopsided.

Average is in comparison to the competition, and shouldn't be defined as 5 out of 10.

For instance, MOH is an average shooter among its counterparts, but it's not a 5, it's a 7 as FPS is a well scoring genre.
