He's an entirely original creation, just like Ricky Rouse and Monald Muck.

I genuinely love Herlock Sholmes. Just the right level of daft.

Everyone complaining needs to go back to Spirit of Justice and take a good long look at Peeslubn Andistandhin.

Seriously, that's the worst character name I've ever seen.

I wish. The Khurainese names are... special. Other examples include Ahlbi Urgaid (guess what he does!) and a priest called Tahrust Inmee.

Still a phenomenal game that everyone in this thread should play, but... yeah. :fp:

The character is straight up called Sherlock Holmes in the Japanese version, it was changed in translation because of copyright from the estate.

Herlock Sholmes was actually first used as a name in 1908 because the author of Arsene Lupin wanted to write a story about Lupin going up against Sherlock Holmes but also couldn't due to copyright.

Okay, boring copyright law question: how long does said estate retain copyright over it for? I like 'Herlock Sholmes' but the general principle feels stupid.

Depends on the country. Sherlock Holmes is already public domain in the UK, but in the US the estate holds the copyright over the later stories that are still covered by US copyright (and they are pretty hardcore over it). Basically if your Sherlock Holmes character shows character traits or has backstory related to those stories they still hold copyright over they will take umbrage. Apparently Sherlock Holmes enters the public domain completely in 2023 so not long to wait - unless they do a Disney and change the law again somehow!

It's a bit of an interesting mess to read about

Ahlbi, by itself, is an alright name as it sounds like it could be real. The entire cast having ridiculous names like that though was the worst part of that game.

I hope the most recent games do get console releases as well though as I never did finish the DLC with Larry Butz in the blimp.

If you're talking the series then the first three games were all on DS. One and three are absolute classics. Then it lost its way a little: four was iffy, five (on 3DS) was average, six was a return to form.

This game (or pair) is a prequel though, so no prior Ace Attorney knowledge required!

I started on iOS with the weird uncanny valley 'HD' graphics and Rise from the Ashes bugged to buggery. Still loved it.

Also: not a huge exaggeration to say that the franchise got me my fiancée.
