Well played man-eater-chimp! Welcome to the world of dusty old books in the forgotten corners of your uni library, smashing essays out on the last day before the deadline and spending most of your semester doing strawberry float all drunk working very hard. History is great fun, but now I sound like a course prospectus so I'll shut up.

JV's a smart bastard, eh? I'm worrying a bit as to how my 2:1 and probable merit degree will affect my PhD application. I really, really hope it doesn't. :shifty:

Oi! It's actually Cardiff University, not the 'University of Cardiff' (although it used to be University of Wales, Cardiff).

(sterling effort on the threads and survey though!)

Yep, "Univeristy of" gets a bit close to UWIC territory.

I handed in my dissertation on Monday this week. Was the third person to hand in my dissertation in the Economics department. 8-) Felt good. 8-)

Also, I put a £5 note into the printing credit machine, and it thought it was a £10 note. 8-)

For anyone interested, the title was Natural disasters and economic growth - Is the Great East Japan Earthquake Disaster a blessing in disguise for the Japanese economy?.

I think the relative originality and focus of my essay is really going to be the best part.

That sounds really interesting. I think and I've pretty sure I've seen it elsewhere that due to the complete battering Germany's industrial infrastructure took in WW2, they could rebuild using more modern and efficient techniques. This is compared to the UK where quite a bit of the industrial landscape was still stuck in the past which contributed in part to the gradual decline in our industrial infrastructure while Germany experienced growth.

Thoughts anyone?

See Skidmore and Toya (2002), who find that economic disasters speed up the somewhat counterintuitive Schumpeterian process of "creative destruction", where a necessity to replace destroyed capital actually speeds up technological progress, which in turn promotes long-term economic growth. There's actually already evidence of it in Japan.

This is basically what my whole dissertation is built upon. Thanks for making me sum it up in 2 sentences. :x

That and the billions of dollars of Marshall Aid that was pumped into the country over the following decades, yes.

I was talking to someone today who was doing a teaching degree, but then after that she wants to join the police and get into radio. I think she should just pick one, all three will make her waste a lot of time.

Why? If she's interested in all three why not do it that way? She's not "wasting time" if she will enjoy the process.

Not everyone wants to become a good little worker drone in the most efficient way possible with one straight career. You've only got one life, try and do as much as you want.

This was my last week of classes on the access course.

I'm really sad the classes have come to an end, but I'm excited about hopefully starting my degree in September.

I can't believe Karlprof has capitalised the M in my name. Always knew Oxford would change him.

EDIT - and same issue as Slartibartfast, it's "Coventry University", not "University of Coventry".

Red and StayDead jump to mind as two who are doing stuff through the Open Uni; there are probably others around here somewhere too.
