Who are you publishing with? It'll be fine! They wouldn't want it if they thought it was bananas.

Interview is beginning of March. It's over Zoom with the two Newcastle Uni supervisors, the HES supervisor, and the director of the funding body (Northern Bridge Consortium). It's apparently likely to be 20 minutes. 20 MINUTES?! I've never had an interview that short. What can you even say?

Palgrave Macmillan/Springer are publishing. I feel a little better about it today, just need to sort a bit of the indexing out and then hand it off to some people to proofread it one last time before I send it, but I don't think I'll ever feel like there's enough content, or it's well enough written, etc. Was a gibbering wreck yesterday though, really shitty and mopey with just about everyone I spoke to and there's no excuse for that. Need to get some perspective.

RE: the interview. This sounds like it's a more "getting to know you" session than a proper, formal interview with loads of questions and stuff. The supervisors will all know pretty quickly into the chat if they think you're a fit for the role and then you can progress further with the application. Best of luck with it - you seem like you know your stuff and are enthusiastic about the subject(and area!) so I am sure you'll be absolutely fine.

This is brilliant news mate. You leaning more towards software or web dev at the moment?

For what it's worth, I know how stressful academia is and I think it's totally understandable to have emotional / mental off-days. I think there's a balance, you have to do your best to not let it get to you, but also be kind to yourself and accept that there are going to be moments where you do feel the pressure. (Just reading the word "thesis" still genuinely makes me cringe a bit, a year after the viva. :slol: )

It'll almost certainly be web dev at this point since 60-70% of this software dev course has been boring as strawberry float.

Submitted the book manuscript late last night, so we'll see how the process goes from here.

Nice, well done on getting it in!

I'm sure it's great, when you're in the heat of scrambling to pull something together it's incredibly easy to start thinking "oh my word this is awful!", I can't imagine even seasoned, successful authors ever really lose that feeling completely!

Yass! Congratulations Maf! Best of luck mate. Out of interest, which college are you at? Someone I know is doing a similar course in your neck of the woods and will be heading to (I think) Napier in 2022.

On a personal academic note, I got some confirmation that my first book is getting released this Autumn. Just waiting to find out a few details about whether it'll be included in an ongoing series or released as a standalone, and cover art and stuff like that. I'm sort of excited but also very nervous.

Cheers lads! Potentially by mid-next year, I'll have a solid wee publication history to my name:

Adapted monograph - Autumn 2021
Article on Protest Music in the George W. Bush era - Autumn 2021
Book chapter on Anthrax/Public Enemy - Summer 2022
Article on image rights, Twitch and professional wrestling - 2022 (this one's at proposal stage so probably won't happen but I really hope it does!)
Co-authored article on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez - 2022

I'm also really slowly working on two more book proposals, one on representations of the Cold War in videogames and another on fictional representations of the NYPD in the last half-century that I feel is relevant to modern discourse.

And yet still no full time job...

I am close to end point assessment for a 2 year Level 4 apprenticeship in Data Analysis. My remaining tasks are a five day project and a one hour exit interview. My coursework/evidence is of good quality, but the thing that will hold me back from achieving a high grade is that I don't use much of a range of data analysis tools in my day job (Excel, SQL) and I'd need to be evidencing a range of tools (i.e. Python / R) in order to achieve a higher mark. I wanted to learn Python as part of the apprenticeship, but I just didn't have time to fit in more than a basic introduction and as it's not being used by my team, it was hard to justify putting work to one side to learn it, so I focused on areas which would benefit both the business and myself.

My project starts in just under two weeks, but I have been provided with the documents already and am allowed to make a plan at this stage, but not actually start working on it yet. The only problem is, from reading the brief, the task can't easily be completed within Excel, at least not properly (this despite the fact that I chose this project because it could be done in Excel). I've got 6 CSV files which need merging, each of which have over 2 million lines of data in them. Part of the brief is to merge them all, but Excel has a limit of just over 1 million lines of data, so I'm not going to be able to fit 12 million lines in to one workbook. Even if I can achieve it, I won't be able to view the complete document myself, as Excel will chop it off when it hits the row cap. So I now have a decision to make, do I bodge something together which doesn't quite meet the brief, or do I spend the next two weeks (most of which I have booked off) studying Python?

If I dedicate time to studying Python, I am more likely to be able to achieve the brief, skill myself in an area which is high up on my to do list and potentially earn myself a higher grade, but there is also the risk that I don't figure out what I need to know in time & spend most of my much needed time off studying when some rest and relaxation is very much needed.

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.

Good luck with your assessment. There are a few people on here who will have some familiarity with Pandas, so if you do decide to learn it you can always make a post if you hit a wall! Hope it goes well either way.

I love Pandas, but I'm not sure that will be much help! ;)

Python is a pretty friendly language to get into and there's a hell of a lot of good material out there to help, particularly in the field of data analytics so I'm sure you'd be able to find copious examples to assist you.

I'm by no means an expert myself but have used Python in the past and would be happy to help with queries if I can

Why? It seems like a good fit for the stated problem to me.
