Rightey wrote:I really need to publish something myself, I'm in my 4th year and all I've done is present stuff with others, and now will be having a paper published as a co-author, but I've never actually done anything myself.

Also I want to present my work, but I'm worried it might get stolen as someone who worked in the same place I did wrote a paper that was very similar to my own work :x

How do you guys deal with that? Is it basically just publish first, and then present on things you already have out there?

What exact field are you in? I guess it's difficult for people to copy work in my area because they don't have access to the raw data I've collected and even conference presentations result in either a very minor publication (abstract only) or an addition to my CV so it would be easy to prove if someone had plagiarised any of my work.

I have a pretty set study team (involving my PhD supervisors and one external guy) who are all senior to me and not many others in our Department really focuses on the area of stroke. Those who do are my age and are friends so wouldn't (hopefully!) steal any of my work... I do sometimes worry that when I publish a methodological paper, there isn't actually anything stopping anyone from going and rushing through the study before I get a chance to finish it. I have a methodology paper coming out soon for a study I'm approximately 50% of the way through so I'll keep you posted with anger if anyone does steal this...

I think you just commit to a specific project with a set team and get yourself on a paper as lead author. After the first time around it becomes much easier.

I do a lot of work with census data, and other public datasets and so if someone knew what I was doing it would be possible to recreate my work, or alternatively, if someone gets the same idea as me, they could come to the same conclusions independently.

Good luck with your paper, hopefully nothing happens. I have a friend who was working on a team that was able to scoop someone else, I can't remember the exact details but his team had to resort to taking out ad space and using that to publish their results in order to beat the other team that was working on similar research. I was pretty surprised you could actually do that, especially as they are in the field of medicine.

Looks like I’m supervising my first undergraduate dissertation. This is both huge for my academic CV and really exciting on a personal level. :toot:

Anyone ever submitted a paper proposal that was outside of their normal field of study? I’m a bit nervous in case the symposium organisers look at my proposal, then look at my body of work and are like “what the strawberry float are you talking about?”

Nope. Good luck :shifty:

I just spent my lunch break creating acronyms for HIV/AIDS related conditions.

Prince Charles Rarely Cuddles The Crying Nudists - Common AIDS-signifying opportunistic infections. Catchy. If anyone has one involving "C D C C K L P D P S H" in any order, I'm all ears.

 Thanks, it's sort-of related to my field of study so I've got the background academic knowledge but it also goes into what I can only describe as comic book studies at one point which is just purely a hobby on my part.

How long did you spend on that acronym that you could've better spent on your actual paper?

Been out of the education game for 12 years and work are putting me through ccna. Boy howdy that's a shock to the system, looks like a fun course though.

E-mailed in a correction approximately 23 hours after publication. How utterly embarrassing. I decided it was better that I announced the mistake and sent in corrections than someone writes a published letter to the editor saying how incompetent I am. Lesser of two evils etc.

What is the CCNA, Johnny? I don't know the acronym.

This week has been a load of bollocks. So was last week. Next week will be worse.

I think you did the right thing, If you hadn't sent in the correction not only might you end up looking incompetent later, but others might end up using your wrong results which could cause serious problems to other studies (I assume).

Also, CCNA is a certification for networking from CISCO.

Good luck Johnny, my friend has a ton of different networking/IT certifications and they've helped him out in his career.

Yeah - I don't want to be forever looking over my shoulder. It's purely the means and standard deviations that weren't correctly copied across due to the number of decimal places in the raw data vs the published data... small differences but differences nonetheless. My significance values and effect sizes were correct so the paper itself is still completely valid - there were just minor alterations of the mean/SD for some variables.

That CCNA sounds intense and a mile outside my comfort zone. Good luck Johnny!

Yeah it's a bit much but I've been using Cisco kit since the start of 2015 so it's not like it's an alien concept.

The hardest part is the self discipline to swot. For what it's worth the acronym is Cisco Certified Network Associate

Pay rise when I'm certified is big though so you know that's incentive!

Having been out of education for almost 20 years, I'm looking at going to university and finally getting a degree. It's something that I've been mulling over for a few years now but since everything is about to go tits up at work now seems to be as good a time as any. Obviously there are financial considerations and I'm still figuring that out. My main concern is just the sheer amount of time I've been out of education. Has anybody here done a similar thing? How did you find it going back into education after a long period of time?

I don't have experience of this from my own education, Outrunner, but if you are a fairly switched on individual, you are going to be leaps and bounds ahead of your average student with less life experience. As a more extreme example, My Mother in her 60s has decided to go back and do a second Masters degree just for the fun of it and she's attaining extremely high grades without thinking her own work is particularly good purely because she is seeing it through an adult's pair of eyes.
