So I just realised my analogy would only account for half of the moon.

The IAU definition of a planet requires a body to 1) orbit the sun, 2) be nearly round in shape, and 3) have "cleared its neighbourhood".

It can be useful to think of the Earth/Moon as a binary system, but the barycenter (point around which the two bodies orbit) is within the radius of the Earth. Therefore the Moon is orbiting the Earth, hence by point (1) is not a planet in its own right.

And yes the preferred hypothesis for the formation of the Moon is that a Mars-sized object collided with the Earth, and the Moon formed out of the collision.
