There's a new anime on Netflix and it has to be one of the worst things ever: it's essentially a fantasy take on whale hunting. Opening ep even shows how much of a hardon they have for the meat. Awful stuff.

S: Neither was the last one. It was a robbery. M: Really? S: Yeah. She stole my heart. And my crown. (❍ᴥ❍ʋ)

Is that the drifting dragons one? I mean dragons are not whales but uh I kinda get what you mean.

That's the one, aye. And no, dragons aren't whales, but the symbolism is clear to see, be it the type of harpoon used or the hunters' seemingly desperate desire for the flesh of the creature.

The use of 3D animation in Hi Score Girls is how I wish all 3D anime looked. I don't know if it's the lighting, or the models but the 3D is so subtle that I only realised it wasn't using traditional methods well into series 1. Other shows that use 3D are almost too 3D and you'd think the lighting is often done in a way so as to adverstise the fact it's in 3D. I find them so unappealing that I sometimes find it difficult to even sit through 5 minutes of them, before feeling the urge to switch off. I'm not sure if HGS is using a combination of 2D/3D (2D for the regular distance stuff and 3D for close ups) but whatever it is, it's really well done. The show's great, too. (It could do with a bit of trimming but I'm really enjoying it.)

Watching HSG (admittedly only the first episode so far!) actually made me think the opposite. I thought it worked well enough. And I dabbled in a bit of Beastars which also has gone to great lengths to retain that hand-drawn feel.

And they both look good!

But in each instance I could still tell they weren't drawn, and I don't think I preferred it - though they still kept that hyper-dynamic elasticity of anime. It made wonder if the (hopefully) slight variability between frames in traditional illustration actually contributed to its inherent feel and texture.

But let's see how HSG and my opinion progress!

Just watched the trailer and see what you mean.

But is it because it's too Whale-y on-the-nose-y that it's bad? I'm just thinking about other similar things like (I suppose) Monster Hunter or whatever - where you kill big beasts for their spoils. And maybe it gains some surprising insight and reflection later on in the series who knows? Like an Attack On Dragon.

So I've used the current stay at home time to read One Piece. Currently 500 chapters in and I've got to say I'm loving it. I think I've just met the last member of the Strawhats and I'm looking forward to getting up to date. It's incredible how seeds were planted in early issues which pay off much later on. Reading the chapters in quick order makes those references all the more impressive.

Oh and a series about exploration and adventure and travel in the current situation is very comfy.

I've been reading One Piece for 13 years and it's just amazing how the seeds being planted early on blossom. It's my favourite manga of all time and one of the things I look forward to each week that a new chapter is out. It's the GOAT.

I've got to say that it's really impressive how easily I've found reading the 500 chapters to now. Never given it an intentional long time sitting - more just a read before bed and I'm really enjoying it.

I see you subscribe to the Columbo school of manga consumption.

Speaking of manga: I've finally properly started to tuck into my Rurouni Kenshin manga and there are so many differences to the anime! Many of which were changed in the anime for the better!

Speaking of Rurouni Kenshin anime: it's been removed from Netflix

:shifty: Speaking of Netflix:

Watch the opening of the ep and you'll see why it's so on the nose. (The harpooning and gutting the dragon.)

Odd if that is the case because it stayed up on there months and months after that was found out.

In that case I guess the license just ran out and they decided not to renew it.

Yeah, it must have been on there for well over a year.

The wife and I finally finished Dragon Ball the other day, so we've led straight into DBZ for a rewatch.

I managed to find a belting rip, too- much better quality than the Orange Box DVDs we got over here. Video taken from the JP Dragon Box releases, in 4:3 with the film grain left in and none of the janky colour correction.

The beauty is in the audio, though. The Japanese audio quality on DVD releases is notoriously garbage, because Toei trashed the masters way back. But in the last few years, some very dedicated fans have unearthed VHSs of the original TV broadcasts, which means we now have restored audio quality infinitely better than the official releases!

And the absolute cherry on top? It includes the original Ocean dub. :slol:

Grandma Goku sounds awful no matter the audio quality :dread:

Yeah, but now her guttural screeching is so crystal clear, you can almost hear the cat they're swinging. :toot:

I kind of take back what I said about Hi Score Girl needing trimming. It probably still does, but on a repeat viewing it wasn't nearly as flabby as I originally thought.

Does anyone else ever watch a dub with subs (i.e. English dub + English subs, etc) so they can pick out the small differences between the spoken and the written? In the HSG subs (and so I am assuming also on the original JPN audio track), Makoto (Ono's sister) drops the F bomb a number of times at the karaoke in Shibuya

I'm not comparing the subs as I'm pretty familiar with the original, but I'm rewatching the Saiyan Saga with the original Ocean dub they showed on Cartoon Network over here, and hoo boy, it is a treat.

The lengths they go to to explain away deaths rivals Brock's jelly donuts! On three separate occasions, Nappa has straight up killed people on-screen, and somebody else has chimed in to say that nobody got hurt. Just now he blew up a news helicopter in midair, crew and all, and as the flaming wreckage descends in a plume of smoke, Yamcha pipes up from off-screen, chipper as anything - "I can see their parachutes! They're okay..."
