They also worked on Batman TAS back in the 90s.

Space Battleship Yamato.

They have a lot of problems and kind of miss the point of the show, devolving quickly into vapid action films. I wouldn't recommend them unless you really want to see more eva. Perhaps that isn't an entirely fair shake, since the third film does try to do something more in line with NGE, but imo it doesnt quite cut it

Watched the three of them yesterday and prefer the action stuff (wouldn't really call it vapid at all) rather than all the other stuff the series turns in to. Particularly loved the expanded Ramiel fight, and the set up to it was fantastic. I thought the third film was the weakest of the three despite the strong opening.

Watching this all just makes me want a slice-of-life Mecha anime.

I've never seen it, but the closest I can think that explicitly has giant robots is Robotics;Notes.

There's plenty of magical girl stuff that thematically merges fighting-off-evil action with cute slice of life. Obviously the one closest to Eva is Madoka, but more Eva might not be what you're looking for? If you want a cuteness overload with weird and dark subtext, Urahara is underrated.

lmao I guess we just got different tastes
the rebuilds are pretty and can be fun to watch, but yeah they aren't what I like about eva since what I love about the show is all the psychological character study stuff and all the general weird gooseberry fool
plus they have less emphasis on asuka and instead give time to mari, whom i hate with all of my soul

I've been recommended Patlabor and that Gundam Builder anime.

VlaSoul, given you also correctly think Asuka did nothing wrong, can I convince you that Nadeko did nothing wrong?

Ah, sorry -- from what you said about why you like Eva I kind of assumed you'd have watched Monogatari. You'll like it, you should watch it.

As well as being being legit good it inspires many very passionate best girl arguments

Nadeko did nothing wrong (at least as far as I know but I know I haven't watched that one series where her hair turns white), but she's not best girl. That award goes to big tiddy cat girl

that's the gooseberry fool i live for

yeah the animation and character designs of that show really appeal to me, I guess the only thing that's held me back from diving into it is the sheer depth of content I'd have to watch

I hope you like slide shows, because there's a lot of that and *Black screen* in the monogatari series. When there actually is animation, it's lovely, but a lot of it is just stills.

Just to be clear, I love the show and it has some of the best openings and closing songs out there (see below), but it might be annoying for some people that.

yeah my favourite show is without contest, Evangelion, so I think slide shows, extended stills and black screens are a perfectly good way to tell a story
