I've never seen it either, mainly for the same reason.

I have a very limited tolerance for anime 'ticks' (the constant repetition of characters' names as a "shocked" response, "Uh?!" and "Ah?" filling a similar role, the massive objectification of female bodies) but this feels different. There's a gooseberry fool load of issues (I mean there's a strawberry floating inflation episode ffs) but the story is a really interesting look at depression and self-worth that's making most of it worth it. It's also strawberry floating gorgeous, which helps.

For christs sake never watch Kill la Kill then.

not gonna say it doesn't have that kinda thing, but eva is much much more than teenage angst

I didn't say generic, I said archetypal. Like I'm sure it was very original back in the day, but I would assume a lot of other shows have taken different bits and pieces from it so it's probably lost some of that impact. That being said I feel I won't suffer too much from that as I generally avoid the giant robot animes, with a few exceptions like FLCL, Gurren Laggan, and Attack on Titan.

I just finished watching the second episode, so far the pacing seems alright, not really much else to comment on yet.

Ah I see, well it definitely has heavily influenced the genre, which is interesting given how it's intended as a deconstruction. I suppose it's like how Madoka Magica came along and added a lot of grimdark to magical girl shows in general, or how slice of life shows incorporated more meta-humour after Lucky Star.

I doubt there is anything out there quite as Eva as Eva is though. It's more in the second half that it really kicks off, so bear that in mind.

honestly you'll probably notice bits of eva in most of what you watch from now on; it's influence on anime as a whole is absolutely massive

No worries there! As I say, I'm not a massive fan of anime but the buzz around this series got me interested. I'm glad it did as it's obviously something really special but I don't think it's converted me.

Imagine thinking Love Live is perfect (true) then not even watching Love Live Sunshine.

Found myself re-watching Yu-Gi-Oh (The main series, not the spin offs) lately. Had forgotten how much I enjoyed it.

Duelist Kingdom is a bit bobbins, but by Battle City when it starts better following the rules of the game the duels get really good.

The newest movie was also really enjoyable, best of the three.

I'm not into the series anymore but I caught the film and it was honestly pretty good for what it was

What's wrong with the spin offs?

Man I love that clip.

It's made even better knowing it's the VA for Goku and that he was literally given the direction "We want it to sound like Arnold Schwarzenegger"

I just never got to the spin offs after getting halfway through GX. Never watched 5Ds, Zexal or Arc-V.
The spin offs don't have Kaiba though so they could never be as good as the original.

No, I definitely got more than the cheap titilation from KlK, in fact all the boob and bum bits were clearly taking the piss out of typical anime tropes. (there's a bit where one of the male characters is perving at Ryuko and a massive caption saying HENTAI appears on the screen, after which I think she punches him).

The main thing I didn't really 'get' while watching it was all the puns and play on words during Mako's frequent 'hallelujah' monologues as I can't speak or read Japanese and most of them aren't subtitled due to their visual nature.

yeah fairs
the wordplay and puns are by far the worst thing about anime for me cuz it's impossible to understand if you aren't japanese

And then if dubbing companies localise those into english language versions that make sense, people complain about how they're destroying the original script because they're idiots who can't understand the difference between translation and localisation.

I understand why people complain about that, but like yeah what else can you do
like the Panty and Stocking dub was pretty heavily localised in that manner iirc but it was done really well

:( I can't help but wonder how good Garou versus Genos would have been if it had taken place in season one. Oh well. At least this new creative team made upgraded Genos feel like a total bad ass, and the fight before it was pretty good as well.
