Rocsteady wrote:I recently started watching the first anime of my life, One Punch Man, and... It's properly exceptional. I think the writing's brilliant, it's tightly plotted and the animation and fights are genuinely exciting.

I've no idea how well it's regarded in general, I'm guessing pretty well, but it's one of my favourite things I've watched in a long time.

What I want to ask is, are there any others like it, or any anime which is generally regarded as being the best of the best? Talking like the anime equivalent of The Wire or the Sopranos.

One Punch Man and its slightly nerdier little brother Mob Psycho 100 are probably the sweet spot when it comes to being both genuinely great and very accessible to a Western audience. It was a very good choice for a first anime!

There are other great shows of course. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is probably a good next step for you. It's a fantasy story with a fair mix of action, drama, and comedy. It's very well thought of and considered one of the best of the genre. (I don't personally like the genre so I didn't finish it, but I appreciate it's very good.) EDIT: In fact, MyAnimeList - like Metacritic but for anime - has it listed as the best-reviewed anime of all time, so there you go.

If you're particularly interested in working your way through the greatest animes of all time, you should probably watch Spirited Away at some point, which is kind of like the Japanese equivalent of a classic Disney film.

Thanks guys, really appreciate all of the suggestions. Going to have a quick research of each of these shows and get watching another series this weekend. Think I'll try the Mob Psycho one next.

I've heard of Spirited Away before so will check that out in the near future too.

Quite excited to get stuck into some of these if they're of the quality of OPM.

There'll be people here with more knowledge on anime, but Mob Psycho 100 is awesome, I believe the manga is done by the same guy that does OPM.

Yeah the manga is written by ONE.

Mob Psycho is basically OPM with a better story.

I love Mob, it's awesome. Though I watch the anime and not read the manga.

Am I correct in thinking Sapce Dandy is also by ONE?

Space Dandy and One Punch Man have the same director for their anime adaptations, but the manga isn't by ONE.

I haven't but I've heard it's pretty good. Probably not on the same level as OPM based on the opinions I've seen around, but still good.

Space Dandy is one of the best comedy animes ever in my opinion. It's not entirely the same director though, Space Dandy is a different director every episode.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is great, I really enjoyed it and I'm fairly picky about what anime I'll watch (can't stand anything overly cutesy or 'slice of life' stuff).

Also Winry

Other stuff I've enjoyed:

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Cowboy Bebop
Gurran Laggan
Kill la Kill
My Hero Academia
One Punch Man
Roruni Kenshin

Really need something else to watch now though.

I've heard nothing but good things about this, sadly I'd have to go to Brum to see it and I strawberry floating hate that shithole with a passion. :x

Another great ep of Kaguya-sama, perfect balance of humour and fluff.

Aside from the cuteness overload, for an ending song that animation is better than most shows can manage.

It's on UK Netflix if you have access to it. I haven't seen all the eps but I enjoyed what I did watch. It's easily one of the best animes on there.
