The was the major sticking point for me. After doing some reading up, apparently the kiss scene earlier in the show was supposed to be a turning point: Asuka really does like Shinji but doesn't know how to express it. Shinji is the same. The kiss is them both failing to express their feelings which leads to the downward spiral of their relationship. From what I've read, a large chunk of the show was supposedly about their relationship. I didn't get any of that so their pairing off seemed super weird.

Also, that last scene...I still have no strawberry floating idea what was going on (apart from the fact that they both rejected Instrumentality). Why was he trying to strangle her? Why does she call him disgusting when he stops? I've not really seen any decent explanation for that ending, except that the Japanese is more along the lines of "I feel sick" rather than "Disgusting".

Speaking of his dad, in the end he says that he's sad that he could never get close to Shinji because he was scared of hurting people/being hurt, but we see that he's very friendly with Rei a bunch of times. WTF is that gooseberry fool?!

Rei was a clone of his dead wife, and his dead wife is his motivation for everything as she's the only person he's ever been able to get close to (he's a grown up version of Shinji essentially)

Ok so that kind of explains those issues somewhat, but there is one other thing, did they sort of backtrack on the ending of the TV show? It seemed like at the very end Shinji had a sort of turning point where he felt it was ok for him to exist and escaped his depression, the part where everyone is telling him congratulations. But then in the movie that aspect seems to be totally missing, and he just goes back to being all depressed and angsty.

From what I can see they ran out of money for the last 2 episodes and bodged together what we got. The originally scripted finale was then expanded and turned into the film.

Folks have different interpretations of how to juggle the two. Some see the film as overwriting the series ending, other think it compliments it. Anno has sort of shrugged his shoulders over the whole thing and told people to draw their own conclusions so, yeah.

Wasn't the film also a bit of a "I'm so strawberry floating sick of this, strawberry float you guys" from Anno as well as he kind of never wanted to make the films in the first place?

Eva stuff:

I saw people recommending that the final two episodes be skipped when it arrived on Netflix which doesn't make sense to me. I can understand them not working for some people, there is an undeniably jarring shift in how the story is told, but thematically speaking it felt like a fitting resolution to a lot of what the show had been tackling with its characters. There were some interesting lore elements left up in the air but as someone whose primary motivation for watching was the emotional growth of the characters, I liked it.

After a cursory search following my viewing of End of Eva, it feels like a knowledge of the reception to the series finale and its effect on the creator is borderline necessary to understanding why the film is what it is. Not that it has to completely alter your interpretation of the events but it has certainly recontextualised some things for me. I was confused at how different Shinji behaved too, but when you consider he is essentially the audience surrogate, an audience that apparently largely lashed out at the show's ending for not delivering on the whole mecha power fantasy feat. your personal favourite flavour of waifu thing, then it becomes difficult to ignore how confrontational having him blow his beans over an unconscious Asuka actually is, not to mention the scenes near the end that delve into how he perceives his relationships with her, Rei and Misato. I kind of love how unapologetically it gives its fans the finger. The film is fascinating for an entirely different set of reasons to the series and I almost see them as entirely separate entities, both are worth experiencing regardless.

It can't be worse than similar sound effects in the Everybody's Golf and Animal Crossing games, after a while I kind of started to like it.

I have actually been somewhere (some old castle/public gardens in northern Spain) that had cicadas and they sound even worse IRL

I haven't seen the films. I watched the series about 15 years ago and I didn't mind it.

Is it worth checking out the films?

Death True is a recap of the entire series with some new stuff for episode 25 and 26 from what I can tell. Might be worth a watch if you want a refresher.

End of Evangelion is basically an alternate ending and takes place after episode 24.

Some of their bigger stuff includes Gundam, Cowboy Bebop, Love Live, Space Battleship Yamamoto, Code Geass, Tiger & Bunny, so they've got a good pedigree from the looks of things.

They also worked on Batman TAS back in the 90s.

Oh strawberry float I just found out there's Eva films that are basically remakes of the entire series?

The rebuild movies.

1.11
2.22
3.33

They're done by Funimation in the west and got back some of the original dub voice actors.
4 is the last one due out next year I think. The first 3 are available on DVD/Blu-Ray now. You can get them from pretty much any regular retailer.

They're less a retelling of the series and after the first one go more and more into doing their own thing, including a completely new pilot character who it's theorised by some fans is Shinji and Asuka's daughter from the future.

Hmm apart from the third film it looks like the Blu-rays are out of print so go for silly prices.

Weird. Would have thought they'd be kept in print for a bit longer than that.

You could try a few branches of HMV and see of they have some leftover.

Last JoJo Friday until next year at the earliest today. :( Hopefully the double episode on the 28th will have a Part VI teaser of some sort like we did for Part III back in 2012.

At least I'll have Dr. Stone Fridays to look forward to for the next few months.

I really wish the JoJo Blu-Rays would come down in price a little bit.

Or Netflix would get Parts 3 and 4 rather than just 1 and 2.

Essentially, they're paired because they have the same sort of trauma. They just have entirely opposite ways of dealing with it which creates an interesting juxtaposition, which is likely one reason that they're attracted to each other. That kiss episode is a turning point because of Kaiji essentially rejecting Asuka, and Shinji's general need for affection and his sexual frustration essentially allow them to latch onto each other. The AsuShin relationship as a whole is used in EoE to force Shinji to confront his issues and other people's issues like a real adult, which is juxtaposed with Kaworu, who gives shinji a relationship that is far too easy and unconditional for someone like him.

Rightey wrote:
Another relationship that just seems to appear out of nowhere is Ritsko and Shinji's dad. They virtually never talk at any other time in the series and then the first time we get an indication that she likes him is when shes sent in front of the Seele council (where she's naked for some reason, why?) and they tell her she's a replacement for Rei, which sends her into some depressive spiral.

I think a lot of Ritsuko's arc is about her being a replacement. Like, Gendo starts an affair with her after her mother dies, because he seems to need them both for the exact same reason, which is probably also used to hammer home how much of a manipulative asshole gendo is and what he does to reach his end goal

Rightey wrote:Also one last thing regarding the robots, why is it when they try to blow up the angels normally it never works, but when an EVA shoots it's giant gun they can kill them? I know there is the whole thing with the AT field, but I thought that was only at close range.

So like, the one time they kill an angel with a gun, I think it's meant to be some kind of positron rifle like what they use against Ramiel early on, since those seem to be one of the few things that can pierce AT fields. The strength of the AT field varies per angel which is why the bombs affect each one differently

Rightey wrote:

But then in the movie that aspect seems to be totally missing, and he just goes back to being all depressed and angsty.

Asides from the audience surrogate and anno's own frustrations stuff, it's implied that shinji has been alone on that beach for a while and that being combined with all the gooseberry fool he went through during instrumentality means he's kind of snapped mentally. You can kind of see it through the unhinged look he has in his eyes. Asuka appearing there is a very weird thing for him so he goes to strangle her essentially to see if she's real+pent up anger+he's strawberry floating crazy.
Asuka's line "Kimochi ga Warui" can mean any number of things, but the way she caresses his face and the poster for the film (https://imgc.allpostersimages.com/img/print/u-g-F4S63N0.jpg?w=550&h=550&p=0) imply that they've learned or will learn to move on from their issues together, since they're really the only two people who can understand each other.

Mafro wrote:Oh strawberry float I just found out there's Eva films that are basically remakes of the entire series?

They have a lot of problems and kind of miss the point of the show, devolving quickly into vapid action films. I wouldn't recommend them unless you really want to see more eva. Perhaps that isn't an entirely fair shake, since the third film does try to do something more in line with NGE, but imo it doesnt quite cut it
