Prices on the manga seem to have gone up with reprints sadly.

Then again I get most of my manga as eBook format these days anyway, and it looks like Kindle Store has the Eternal Edition reprint for about £7-12 each, though it hasn't gone through the entire run yet by the looks of things.

The thing that annoyed me most was that I hadn't finished reading through the Stars manga volumes before they were destroyed, so I still haven't actually read the whole thing

Bloody hell. How did they get damaged? I learned my water damage lesson very young: one of my idiot brothers left all my cool af books (dinosaurs, UFOs, mythical monsters, etc) on a window sill Bastard.
Glad digital re-prints are at a decent price, but I'd have thought the physical prices of old reprints would come down with new reprints being released, not go up.

I know mangas are released every week, but bloody hell... I don't think that'd be quick enough for me: 1 chapter of One Piece is over way too quickly!

As a non-Anime head I have questions. o/

Avatar TLA is obviously ace. The sib enjoyed The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, too. Anything else like that? We know about Ghibli obviously (Gillian Anderson in Mononoke might be the best beit of animated casting ever) and the sib is getting into Soul Eater. We liked the idea of Death Note, Fairy Tail etc but they weren't clicking for some reason. Sib also likes Ranma 1/2 and (I know it's not anime but) the new She-Ra. Also as an aside, if your recomendations don't involve pervy camera angles, Raiders-of-the-Lost-Ark level boobery and all that jazz, that'd be cool. It's just weird how much of the anime I've seen is basically a twelve year ld's wank bank fantasy. (yes I know Ranma has some of this but hey)

More for me, is there any all-ages anime that has no dialogue? I've really started to get into stuff like, say, Tom and Jerry, Shaun the Sheep etc. I even caught a recent Pokemon episode that was mostly just in Pokemon speak. I like the idea. Cheers!

You must have heard of stuff like One Punch Man and My Hero Academia, aye? I can't think of much pervy stuff in OPM, but MHA is a bit on the pervy side considering they're school children. Hunter x Hunter is another really good one. There are two versions of that, I've seen the newer of the two. I also recently got into Jo Jo's Bizarre Adventure. Can't think of any questionable content in that except for one or two eps, and those are way down the line.

Other recommendations...

A Silent Voice (12 rating - redemption story about a school bully and a deaf girl)

Saiki K (Psychic kid in school. Format is bite size eps which usually don't have full continuity but do have a thread running through them which connects them, and then sometimes you'll get eps with full continuity)

Hi Score Girl (Romantic comedy set around 90s arcade games)

Can't think of any silent (as it were) anime, though...

Re: recs: If your sib likes Ranma 1/2 they might like Gintama. If they like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time they might be interested in the director's latest project Mirai, or in Your Name which is another highly-regarded fantasy-romance. If they like Ghibli stuff, they might like Little Witch Academia, which has a lot of the same harmonics as Kiki's Delivery Service (but with a load of Harry Potter mixed in). One Punch Man is an easy rec for anyone getting into anime, particularly for anyone who likes a mix of action and comedy, and if they like that then they'll like Mob Psycho 100 too. Lots of people seem to like Boku no Hero Academia.

Re: Tom & Jerry / Shaun the Sheep: I don't know of any anime with no dialogue off the top of my head. Bananya only has the dialogue "nya", but has a human narrator on top so doesn't quite fit (and is very much a show for small children). I feel like Polar Bear Cafe is the closest anime I know to the feel you're describing, but it very much has dialogue like any other show.

Oh, of course, we blasted through OPM series one when it came out! Escaflowne is another the sib loves, not seen it myself though. Brilliant theme song/intro though.

As an aside, the sib recently remembered Anime Central (or was it just Anime Channel) the six hour block that started at about midnight on some obscure satellite channel a while back. We've been editing faux-VHS "blocks" of our own using episode-ones and the original idents, along with adverts. Surprisingly fun/therapeutic.

It's not as directly related to your sib's interests, but I'd recommend My Roommate is a Cat if they like the sound of extremely gentle, relaxing shows where nothing much happens, or Flying Witch for that but with a fantasy theme; Nichijou if they're interested in a wacky, surrealist sketch comedy, or alternatively if they'd prefer a more grounded slice-of-life comedy then Barakamon; as dramas go, Hibike! Euphonium and Violet Evergarden might be worth reading the descriptions for; and some classic animes everyone will talk about if they end up making other anime nerd friends are Steins Gate, Haruhi, and Evangelion, though be warned those can all be very "anime" in places (particularly Haruhi which revels in it).

Some more recs which are straight-up unrelated to your sib's interests but might at least give you synopses to read on Google or whatever, maybe something will catch your eye!

Other comedies I like which aren't creepy are Tonari no Seki-kun, Sakamoto Desu ga?, and Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge. Amaama to Inazuma is an extremely cute slice-of-life but a bit "anime" in its premise. Another romance to try, with a videogames theme, is Net-juu no Susume. A light drama I really liked when it aired but that never got that popular was Sakura Quest, which is basically just about life after moving to a small rural town.

For the sake of covering every genre: Higurashi is the archetypical horror anime if that's a genre they want to try out. It has a few grim scenes though as you'd expect from a horror. Also, if they are into j-pop, there is a whole subgenre of musical anime, and I think K-ON! is the best introduction to that, or possibly Zombieland Saga, as they have other elements to the show to ease you in (school slice-of-life comedy and surreal necromancy comedy respectively). (I am personally a huge Love Live fan but I think you need to develop a bit of a thick skin for anime nonsense before jumping into that!).

Any verdict on InkyPen? Tempted to get it for the switch (I don't have a tablet) - and it seems to have a decent library of manga via shounen jump?

It's series from Kodansha Publishing, so Weekly Shounen Magazine and the like rather than Weekly Shounen Jump published by Shueisha.

There are a lot of great series there but from impressions I read a few weeks ago there are some volumes missing and I don't know how often the selection is updated. I'd subscribe for a couple of months to read classics like Blame! and Battle Angel Alita if I didn't already own them.

I've been reading the One Punch Man manga after subbing to that Shonen Jump online. I bought the first volume a while back but never really got into it, but watching the anime made me reconsider. The series really opens up once the Hero Association stuff is introduced and you discover that there are other characters besides Saitama and that they're actually interesting.

One of the best things (there are so few ) about season 2 of the anime. One in particular (You're already partially aware of him if you've seen the whole of the first season of the anime, even though he barely speaks.)

And how good is Minnie Driver as Lady Eboshi too?!

Can I also second Karl's recommendation of Your Name - I think it is probably my favorite film, period. But even if it doesn't hit the exact Venn Diagram sweet spot that it seems to do for me, people in general fall under its spell.

Also, it's probably not quite the right genre, but I've thought of a great silent anime short!

Does anyone remember Memories? The anthology film of three short stories. There's one directed by Otomo called Canon Fodder which I Think was silent and was also Great, it has such a unique vibe and style and I've often thought about it since.

Talking of anthologies, now that it's summer and there's cats about walking through overgrown sun-blotched grass, I'm often reminded of Beyond from The Animatrix collection. So beautiful and such a specific atmosphere,, loose, sunny off-day with a streak of wonder.
