PostThe language of straight boys
by Gario » Mon Aug 25, 2008 11:44 am

Working behind a bar in one of the biggest clubs in the north has allowed me to meet some of the best and worst young straight guys around. And something that's stuck in my head is the way they talk to me in an effort to charm or thank me for serving them.

I can accept "Alright geezer" just as easily as I can "matey", but what on earth is this "safe" thing? They were relentless last night: "How much is a beer? Ah, safe mate, do me one."

"That's £3.50, please.'

"Saaafe. One for yourself."

I suppose it's a lingo peculiar to straight boys in the same way that a word such as "babes" is common to queerios.

What do you have to say for yourselves, you football-playing, button-bashing, boobie-fondling, Lynx-spraying, Nike-wearing, beer-swigging heterosapiens?

I hate anyone who says "safe". I also hate anyone who says "babes".

I regularly used the word gay in front of my gay friend last night, like saying this is gay and general stuff like that.

Is it the same as saying the N word infront of black people?

Genuine question because I wasn't sure of if I had made a social faux pas.

Your clientele are chavs.

I once went to London and got talking to some locals. Every other word was "Bruv" or "Innit". Conversations were like "Bruv innit? Innit Bruv? Bruv bruv bruv innit bruv bruv. Innit innit iniit bruv bruv bruv". I couldn't for the life of me understand what these blackguards wanted.

'Safe' doesn't really bother me, what does irritate me is when people say...'safe, blood', 'I'm gonna bus' him up when I catch 'im/see 'im'

:x

I was about to say the same thing after reading the first post, and the ones which subsequently followed it.

Most if not all of the terms bandied about so far are what I'd expect to hear from a chav.

Is 'I'm gonna bus' him up' supposed to be used as a threatening term?! My favourite threat is 'I'm gonna spark you out, boy'. Rubbish.

Also, has anyone else encountered anyone who refers to money as 'bar'? As in 'My jacket cost 50 bar'? I've only ever heard this in Cheltenham.

I say "cool". Does that mean I'm not "safe"?

Nah, chavs isn't the best term because these people were mostly well spoken and Uni students.

One of things I used to hear at uni a lot was "izzit". It didn't even make any sense! This guy on my course used to say it all the time. One day I said to him that I went to the cinema the night before and his response was "izziit". WTF :?

Uni students who pay £3.50 a pint? Leeds centre is very expensive generally mind, couldn't find a pint under £3.

I have a problem with people who use the term 'sick', as in 'that's sick mate' and I don't know why.
