Looks like I've given up on Ring Fit Adventure. It's been a few weeks now so I'm just going to have to accept I'm going to be a fat lad forever

I thought i'd try War Thunder and World of Tanks. I like tanks, what can possibly go wrong? Turns out a lot. I spent a couple of evenings either seeing no enemies but spontaneously exploding as they obliterate me from a nearby hedge/hilltop, or my shots bounce off their hulls while they kill me in one shot, even in the bottom tiers where everyone starts with rollerskates with a gun on top. Seeing the monumentous grind needed to get anywhere realised it would take far longer than I was prepared to spend for an outcome I didn't really care about.

I felt the same sense of sadness, anger, ennui and misery at the futility of it all, my own incompetence and what a complete waste of time it had been, conjuring up memories of similar experiences of the multiplayer games I played in the past like Counterstrike and TF2, as well as more modern games like Overwatch, where any momentary or fluke successes were greatly outweighed by getting bodied over and over again and the nagging feeling that all I was doing was acting as a moving target for others to have fun through, instead of actually enjoying the experience, and only getting pissed off and more and more miserable in return. I do not want to spend my leisure time feeling like that again, so I quit and uninstalled them. This rant probably belongs in the depression thread but whatever.

Catherine
I spent another hour or so with it, and it's just so boring. Cut scenes are far too long and dull, most of my time seemed to be spent watching it rather than playing it, and when I did finally get to do something, I wasn't enjoying it. I've seen some reviews rave about the story, but it does nothing for me at all. I couldn't care less about this chump and his two girlfriends. Don't have time to be playing games I don't enjoy, so onto the next one.

Have you tried to git gud?

In all seriousness, that's exactly how i feel about PVP multiplayer. I will never understand the appeal, you never get the satisfaction of a sense of improvement because the goal posts are shifting in an unpredictable manner. Bonus (negative) points if you have to play as part of a team with randoms, where there is even less of a baseline to judge yourself against.

Carrion is just getting abandoned now. Game is utterly broken without a map. I've been wandering around for the last hour or so trying to work out where to go, the tunnels are ridiculously small and hard to make out, all the areas look the same. And the game itself isn't great either.

Doom (2016)

I bailed on this 3 levels from the end. I just couldn’t bring myself to complete it as it was getting too repetitive and samey.

It’s a good game, but for me it was 3 levels too long.

+ A nice return to the fast-paced shooter glory days
+ Frantic
+ Audio and graphics are top notch

- The levels and encounters got very repetitive and blended into each other.
- The ‘key’ mechanic has had its day
- The large maps didn’t do it any favours.
- Controls are so-so on a controller
- Ammo is extremely scarce early-on
- The Imps are annoying as strawberry float.

Also, as a bit of a metalhead I don’t see where the soundtrack praise is coming from. It was good initially, but like the other aspects of the game it got pretty repetitive with minimal variation.

A 7/10 on the whole. With a more streamlined campaign and a more linear map it could have easily been a 9.

Does Doom Eternal improve on any of these aspects?

It’s way harder, if that helps? Most of your complaints carry through, as well.

I hated Doom 2016. Thought Doom Eternal would be different.

It isn’t. I think I’m pretty done with iD games. The last time I enjoyed Doom was the PSVR Doom. Not even enjoyed the new Wolfenstein games.

I loved W2, the political aspect mainly, but didn't get on with Doom at all. Key cards should have strawberry floated off 20 years ago.

Looks like I’ll be avoiding Doom Eternal then - appreciate the heads up! I tried playing Wolfenstein: The New Order recently and I didn’t enjoy that either. Although I didn’t get anywhere near as far in that.

I’m wondering whether to even install The Old Blood (got them cheap in a double pack) or if id games are just too stuck in the past for my liking.

Either that or Halo Reach (played for the first time recently) and Titanfall II have just ruined all future shooters for me.

FPS is a very diverse genre of which Doom is just one small (and until recently neglected) part, there's room for all kinds of shooter games and we don't all have to like every type! I love FPS games with lots of depth, mechanics and story as much as anyone but at the same time I'm very glad that more fast paced, arcade experiences like Doom 2016 have made a return as well!

Spiderman - PS4

I think I'm getting old as I just couldn't get my head around this, it's too frantic, hard to see where enemies are and who is attacking me from where. I had to turn down the difficulty at least once in the first level and I died several times in the first boss fight before calling time on this If it was only going to get more complicated after what was essentially the tutorial.

It took me quite a while for the combat of Spiderman to really click with me, I was expecting it to be more similar to the Arkham games. It initially feels like it is, but the way the enemies are less likely to 'wait their turn' I think is one of the fundamentals. I saw in a video the other day that the combat for Arkham was initially going to be like rhythm games before it was recreated, and I can believe that.

Spiderman is not like that, and it's easy to get overwhelmed if you're not using the right strategy. While I didn't struggle as much as you seem to be, it did take me until I had most of the upgrades for me to actually feel like a superhero that can take down a group quickly - but I still enjoyed the journey.

I tried Witcher 3 about 3 times (restarting each time) before it finally clicked for me and now I have a 85hr game going and not quite finished yet. I think it's just got the worlds slowest start compared to what the game eventually ends up offering.

I gave up on Arkham Knight a while back, it has all the DLC which confuses me slightly working out what I’m doing. Turned it off eventually as I was sick of the bat mobile missions & what felt like very repetitive button bashing fights.

I reinstalled it this weekend and played for a few hours back on the main story about 80% through & just feel the same. It looks good but it’s bloody repetitive & doesn’t feel fun.

Gears Tactics - I really like a lot of what the game brings to the turn based tactical shooter arena but the utterly strawberry floating impossible scavenger missions can GTFO, I don't see how some of these can be legitimately beaten, even deliberately sacrificing all the non-important (e.g don't automatically lose the mission upon death) doesn't help as there's simply too many enemies pouring in from all sides while simultaneously being bombarded with airstrikes.

Looks like I may have given up on Kingdom Hearts 2. I forced myself through the intro a couple of weeks ago and finally got to the Mulan level but haven't been back since.

I'm not even sure I really enjoyed the first one that much.

Probably should just cut my losses and uninstall it.
