Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns

Definitely given up on this now. I don't have the time or inclination to continue. I liked XIII, and to a lesser extent XIII-2, and wanted to like this, but I just can’t. It’s dull, tedious, drawn-out and confusing. I actually liked the original plot, but it followed the trajectory of the games themselves; started out promisingly, but gradually got worse and just ended up being a mess. Guess I'll have to read up about the ending online somewhere.

Polybridge
Staggeringly dull.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

This was going ok but then a 3x3 sliding block puzzle where each piece had a metal thing on top which casts a shadow on two separate walls to make two different pictures showed up. After about 10 minutes I had it right for one but they were the wrong way round for the other. After another 10 minutes of moving things round again and having it not right for either of them anymore I was hit by a tidal wave of ennui and called it there and then. I think the Uncharted formula has kind of run its course, 4 was amazing but after that I was kind of done with it.

Just gave up on Wolfenstein 2 as it's really not very good. I got sick of dying without warning and the self-indulgent cutscenes. Then the game had me aimlessly wandering around the hub area looking for a character who had gone missing. That's not fun.

Can I just shoot Nazis and feel unstoppable doing it, please?

strawberry float off Wolfenstein 2. I enjoyed the reboot but I hate this sequel. RtCW will always be the best.

NieR Automata. Map confused me and often left me going in the wrong direction. Finally found the way i needed to go for a side quest before finding i was way to low level, and that i would have to go all the way back to resume the main quest. Just couldn't bring myself to do it.

Just gave up on this as well, but I think I lasted longer than you did

Got to a multiple stage boss fight after a really long section, died a few times, ran out of healing items, can't leave said boss fight to restock.

That is strawberry floating shite design. Uninstalled it almost immediately.

I had just completed
assault
. Nothing up to this point had been overly challenging (i had not "died"), it just felt like i was in the pause menu all the time.

The thought of
having to do all of it again several times
brings me out in cold sweats to be honest.

Dragon Age
I was enjoying this at first, but a few hours in it was just getting more and more frustrating. Far too many enemies made some areas a mindless slog and endurance test, the quest tracker didn't actually seem to track quests or show me where to go and so was utterly useless, and the final straw was some kind of portal/maze thing that I seemed to be trapped in and couldn't leave before having to do a load of repetitive, tedious shite. I don't know if the developers forgot that games are supposed to be fun or what, but damn, I definitely wasn't enjoying myself with this.

I got to the Eve boss fight. I don't know, maybe you did get a bit further then?

Another one to the pile; Hob, an Epic Store freebie.

This epitomises the kind of indie game which boils my piss. Action platformers/Metroidvanias that think dropping you in a world with no indication of who/what/where you are at all creates a sense of mystery or intrigue, along with characters who speak but in alien words with no subtitles.

What happens for me is I run around for a while doing...stuff. Machines light up, doors open, i hit some bad guys and get given a marker on a map to go to because...? As such I have no reason to give a gooseberry fool about anything that happens, which is only amplified by what would be minor setbacks like dying and respawning, even if the respawn point is close by to the point where I completely check out.

Other indie darlings like Hyper Light Drifter had the same effect - games journos go on about "It made me want to explore the world, sometimes i'd sit for a while and look at the scenery and think about what happened to the people who used to live in these ruins and that spark of emotion made me have a little cry, 10/10 GOTY, Best of E3" but I quickly go "why am I here, who am I, why should I care?" and without an answer I quickly and irrevocably don't, as the answer is rarely worth the effort.

Edit: Ni No Kuni 2.

I absolutely loved the first game, even with its weird pokemon gameplay. It was studio ghibli through and through: emotional trauma, villains who were just sad, lonely or had tried to do the right thing a long time ago, all in a world of sumptuous towns and vistas accompanied by beautiful soundtrack. This is there in parts and while the actual combat was a lot better, being more like a conventional action game, the story was pretty thin, I was almost constantly underlevelled (and levelling up seemed to take forever, for reasons i'll get onto) meaning that it was like slamming into a wall over and over again. The side quests weren't interesting or fun, being typically finding one to three of the huge range of items in the game and bringing it to them, or fighting some monstrously over levelled monster.

Speaking of monsters, you can tweak your damage bonuses and resistances, getting more protection against "light" damage for less against "dark", that sort of thing. The problem is that there is no bestiary to tell you what type of monster they are or what type of damage they do (except for some world bosses) and no way to change it once in combat, so its hard to actually plan ahead and use it effectively. The final straw was a race through the streets of a town against some precocious child for reasons i had forgotten, one of the jrpg classics where you have to take a shortcut, and after several attempts of following a guide online and getting nowhere near close all the above came to a head and I was strawberry floating done. So I read the plot ending online and deleted the save (at least 30 hours, and i was quite near the end but couldn't face anymore by that point) to properly salt the earth. If only CEX was open I'd sell it in a hearbeat, might stick it on ebay.

The vast majority of those were freebies from twitch prime/epic games/other giveaways, and it didn't take very long for most of them to become apparent they aren't my thing.

I’m actually looking forward to Xbox getting that ‘surprise me’ feature (starts a random game up) as it may make me retry games I’ve left abandoned.

The author of that mod is a neo-nazi shithead. Try Project Brutality instead if that bothers you.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare
The game decided to delete my check point in a bloody abutting level. Unbelievable this type of gooseberry fool still gets through play testing.

Ori and the Blind Forest
Right at the beginning of the game in stumped into an annoying section that has a little cut scene right after a save that I've watched 5 times now. Leaving it here as this isn't a good indicator that I'm going to like the design.

Detroit: Become Human (PC version) is testing my patience. The game looks so impressive, but I guess I'm not really into the genre. The story seems quite dull, too. Luckily, I got it for just £16.99 on the Epic Games store (a while back they gave me a £10 discount voucher that needed to be used up by next month). I can't see me pushing on to the end - I'm mired about halfway through. Ah well.
