Simplistic and wrong. If Joel had popped the knee off a lady. You’d still be squirming about it now.

That's some good reasoning right there. Can you cite your sources, I'd really like to read into their theses a bit more?

Are you kidding me? How do you think they dispose of all the dead bodies?
Those things are the real monsters.

Trufax - more people die from giraffe attacks in Africa per year than attacks from hippos, lions, crocodiles and hyenas COMBINED

Looks fantastic, hopefully it all flows so smooth in the final game as it was in that scripted playthrough. No problems with the violence, it's a game set, what, 15-20 (A guess here) years after the world's gone to gooseberry fool. You had Davids group eating survivors they stumbled across so go forward a good 10 years and things most certainly won't be getting any nicer. During the opening level of Wolfenstein 2 your groups 'leader', a disabled women in a Dead Space suit, gets her noggin chopped off and the head tossed at you while your old war buddy gets his arm cut off. Did that garner as much attention as TLOU 2 for it's violence? Or was it OK with that because it was a Nazi woman who had done it and Nazi's were evil bastards anyway so whats a little disabled woman head chopping. And the way you repay her back at the end of the game wasn't exactly rainbows and unicorns :slol:

Put it one way, my 4 year old sneaked up on me while I was just finishing Wolfenstein 2 and as B.J. does the deed with Engel using his trusty knife I hear her say "Wow dad thats a lot of tomato sauce"

Yeah, she's probably going to grow up and be a murderer. That or get a fetish for body painting with Heinz Tomato Sauce :slol:

This is a good comparison! The violence in Wolfenstein is quite shocking, especially the Frau Engle scenes in Colossus.

My point of view on this is that it's a far more cartoonish game than TLoU. Its violence is over the top, its weapons are over the top, its world is over the top. It's the difference between the violence of something like Die Hard and the violence in Hostel. One is boom boom boom heads blowing up, people getting shot. The other is gloomy, gritty, lingering nastiness. From what we've seen TLoU is very much the latter, and Wolf the former.

I'm calling it now, the ending of Last of Us 2 will just see Ellie being the last human alive and just giving up and letting herself get eaten by giraffes.
The camera will then pan away slowly as the Giraffes then walk away smugly knowing they now rule the world.

Powerful stuff  .

It's common practice to find a high vantage point when escaping zombies/infected as they can't climb very well.

Giraffes, with their powerful long necks, have no such problems reaching their human victims in the hunt for warm flesh.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Do you think the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan is gratuitous violence? Does it being a relatively accurate portrayal of history make a difference? If so, is a film like Drive just reveling in murder like Hostel? I'm genuinely curious as that seems like a case of double standards. To me that scene was showing human beings devolving back to barbarism and not just a case of strawberry floating someone up for gooseberry fools and gigs.

See, that's another good comparison. SPR definitely contains brutal, uncompromising violence and yes, it does linger (the notorious bit with the guts for example). It's still not the same tone as something like Hostel though. In Hostel, the violence is the entire point of the piece. It's there to shock and disgust. For me, that's the tone presented by the TLoU2's trailers. We don't know the context for the violence*, so it becomes the sole point of the presentation; brutality for the sake of brutality. See that dude? We're going to disembowel him.

SPR uses gore surprisingly sparingly after the first scene, whereas all we've seen from the game is brutal kill after brutal kill. It's been tiring watching these trailers. At no point have I watched them and thought: I sure wish I was playing this.

I hope to be proven wrong by the final product. I hope that these shocking moments of violence are offset by the same world class storytelling (both narrative and environmental) as the first. Choosing to emphasise the violence of the world in order to emphasise its #maturity however seems puerile to me. Try hard.

*And I'm not talking about worldbuilding, I'm talking immediate context.

Last of Us panel on the E3 Coliseum now. Couple of snippets so far.

- There’s a jump button
- It’s still a linear game
- Possibly biggest Naughty Dog game yet
- New classes of infected
- You can craft ammo
- Game starts up in Jackson
