The fact the glass is just… glass really adds to the immersion. Rather than have the one or two “smashable” panes dotted around it all behaves the same. Throw a brick through it or shoot it and it smashes perfectly, but “punch” it with a brick or gun equipped and you’ll break it *with* the thing in your hand completely naturally and save your ammo. Whether it’s a room with a locked door, an alternative route, or even a vending machine with some supplies inside, it consistently reacts in a realistic and convincing manner, leading you to think of it as not a gameplay mechanic, but as just a real, tactile thing.

The rope tech is just insane. Unlike anything I’ve seen in any other game. Even the best physics based 2D games don’t get rope behaviour super accurate, where the ropes are only really convincing when pulled taut or behave like a chain with hidden links. This not only does it in a 3D space, with a player character accurately interacting with it when taut or slack, but it uses it in puzzles where the solution is literally down to thinking about it as if it were a real rope. It’s just totally next-level

Yeah the physics engine is just immense. In terms of pushing the limits of software on consumer level hardware Naughty Dog have got to be the absolute best. The only other game comparable is Red Dead 2 imo. Still not decided which is doing it better.

It's like when Half Life 2 came out and that was the gooseberry fool at the time.

These are two great observations. The glass is overlooked so easily because you just accept it so quickly. The rope stuff is impressive all the way through, that first puzzle with the power cable is a genuine wow moment.

Love the glass and Rope mechanics. Just seems common sense but its not done well at all alot of the time. That first rope puzzle was great.

On my 43rd playthrough of this now. Such a stunning game. I could spend endless hours mooching around that open area of Seattle.

I'm totally conflicted about trying it. The gore does turn me off but the environments and setup options are attractive. I think I may try it when it goes on offer (and it seems that I've just missed it on sale).

Sorry 3rd full playthrough.

Play it mate. The gore isn't that bad and its contextually appropriate.

Yeah the gore isn't that bad unless you use bombs or shotguns against humans.

I was talking about the violence in cut scenes which I'm finding very distressing. The actual gameplay violence I don't find too bad and isn't really anything not seen in other 18 rated games.

(Actually blowing people up with trip mines is mildly amusing)

The first time i stabbed a dog was pretty traumatic.

I sent a video of it to all my friends who love dogs. They were not pleased.

Humans are weird

Yeah the violence in cutscenes can be very visceral but I think that's the point. It makes more sense as the story goes on.

Its not real though, so unless you're 5 years old, I dont see the problem with any of it.

In my day 5 year olds were made of tougher stuff.

Started replaying this a few days ago, it's for me such a fun game to replay and get stuck in again with different ways to combat people too. I think I've really come to apperciate the linear aspect of the enviroments too, there's bits to explore and differenation in some places, but it's not overly huge yet still feels like you are in these huge cities.

As opposed to say Creed Vallaha or similiar which just seems to be huge for the sake of it sometimes. Not every game needs to be an open world sandbox. ;)

I wish they'd hurry up with Factions though, if that is coming. Loved the first version.

I mean, neither are films but some stuff can still be uncomfortable to watch.

No, he said unless you're 5 years old he doesn't see the problem.

Therefore ages 0-4 and 6+ are fine.

Finished this yesterday. The last fight on the beach was deeply unpleasant and I felt very uncomfortable playing through it. I think Ellie is a bad person and deserves everything she gets, does she have any redeeming qualities?

Very depressing end. Wish they would have shown life in Jackson or the Wolf Stadium one more time just so I can see that there might be some hope in a post apocalyptic world. I loved those bits :)

Arguably one of the best games I've ever played in terms of storytelling and technical achievement. I still think RDR2 pips it in terms of my favourite though.

Going to do a new game + now to collect the remaining trophies. I've decided to play aggressive with infinite ammo and crafting switched on

I guess a redeeming quality would be that she was prepared to sacrifice her life to save humanity? :P

By the end of the game I just seen her as a victim and felt sorry for her. She was fighting almost out of a sense of duty to Joel and clinging to a feeble hope that killing Abby would make things right. She couldn't be more mentally broken as a person and at the very end realises how much she hates and blames herself for the time she lost with Joel.
