Ah, I thought the other failed test subjects (which you find out from the surgeons recorded messages) were immune too but it seems like that wasn't the case

Those may be the ones that was bitten/infected and in early stages of the virus or worse experimenting on live clickers.

I don't even remember God of war being talked about, other than how people got tired of the copy and paste troll boss fights and liked "BOY"

I've seen GOW's "wide linear" structure, combat system and single shot cinematography brought up a lot. Although the structure is basically what OOT did in 1997...

That they personally know of anyway.
The world they live in has little or no global communications and even between the US states seems almost impossible.

Its amazing to say it's not being tallked albout when one person's playthrough has generated page after page of discussion from people who played the game months ago.

I've also seen way way more video essays talking about LOU2 than I have GoW

Yeah we get it Kratos, you're an angry man who's plot motivation is a dead/endangered female. What a novel concept, so much to discuss. Wait what's that? None of your characters are technically original? Even more discussion to be had!

Once again, you've misrepresented my position, and argued against that. I said it's dropped out of the cultural spotlight in a way the first game simply didn't. There's a difference between some people talking about it on a message board and the wider cultural dissemination of a work.

Anyone interested in a nuanced discussion of the game and its themes, successful and not, should give the Vice spoilercast a listen to. It's loooooong, 2 2.5 hour pods, but really, really insightful. The most interesting aspect is their putting into context the game's inherent basis in Israeli politics, something both main writers have admitted to. They also talk about its flawed central premise: that seething, irrational road-rage hate is a human constant (it isn't and I think this is why I didn't connect with Ellie at all)

I still find it astonishing you dont connect with Ellie and yet do so readily with Abby.
Theres no empathy for Ellie. No heartbreak at her loss. You seem to pay lip service to that.
I remember lingering at Joel's house. Shocked and sad that he was dead (even though it was expected and wih some justification). The little moments. At his grave, seeing his home . Oh god - smelling his jacket and then fnding his watch. That broke me.

You just breezed through that and launched straight into the
Ellie is hating and killing - how unoriginal.
For me. Your play through is a biaised one with your obvious dislike of many aspects of the company and with a huge determination to reinforce already fairly fixed opinions. Backed up by negative reviews you read or watched months ago.
Delighted youve played the game and the debate and responses youve inspired have been brilliant. Youve been good natured and taken some stick and still persevered and finished a game you were determined to dislike but have actually enjoyed a good deal of.
If we accept videogames are art then great art is wonderful because it can mean so many things to so many people.
Deeply and superficially.
Its a shame you couldnt play it without your presets. But im delighted you played it anyway.
As you say this isnt an argument.
For me its a masterpiece and possibly the greatesr game ive ever played. Certainly the most immersive and emotionally involving. I found that to be the case with several friends and we still talk about it now. Its personal opinion.
Mine is heavily influenced by my relationship with Chloe.
We would watch the first games cut scenes as movies and chat about the dynamics of our relationship. Of my leaving her mother and by extension her.
I couldnt imagine losing her and i think the first games themes really struck a chord because of that.
Your approach is completely different to mine. I went into this knowing id love it. Accepting that events would challenge me and my perceptions of the characters.

Troy Baker urged us to be open minded. I was and the ganes biggest achievement was to turn my affection and love of Ellie into despair, disapproval and disgust at her actions but also immense sadness and pity and some hope for her future.
But the genius was to turn Abby from a hated and loathed character (however justified her actions)who i just wanted to kill -into just as nuanced and believable and loveable character as Ellie. I rooted for that girl and Lev and felt such relief and joy that they survived.
Thats how good it was for me.
Clearly id conditioned myself to love it.
Our paths and conclusions may be different but im glad we took the trip.

Don't like certain aspects of the game = I'm biased and have an agenda. Do you not see how that's counter-productive to a rational conversation on this?

I went out of my way, on multiple occasions, to state that I enjoyed aspects of the game. I came away disappointed, but not certainly not hating the game. The fact I think it's a shallow examination of pain, with some excellent dialogue and character moments, shouldn't need to be defended against accusations of bias. People aren't binary creatures, adoring or despising everything. There's nuance to be had here.

I didn't like it as much as you. That's it.

Pretty much what i said.

I even indicated my own positive bias.
If you dont think yours is. Lets agree to disagree but your last point is pretty much it.

I will check out that review if i can find time.

At least we can fully agree its better than ROS.

Ugh.

Taf's critique of the game not being "Abby's arms are too big" makes it better than 99% of the critique I've read so I'm happy for that ;)

I've replayed this about 4 times now upping the difficulity each time. It's linear and at times frustrating sure, but it's just a fun world to play around in I think.
